  • Ring

Bottom groove for me. Me and my brother would just use two rings in our old sixes in 1100 which works just fine! any way you want to i guess?

The no tension ring goes in the bottom groove, closest to the crank pin. We used to make them from Alum. but you could aneal the ring to remove the tension against the cylinder wall. I do not advise running with out a ring in the bottom groove.

      • make a dead ring by heating with propane torch,,till dull red then let cool takes the tension out of it,,, or just use a worn out old one... you are entering the twilight zone..... lots and lots of little tricks,,,,,, especially the little shiny one on the gearcase,,,,hehe

Darn, you guys giving away all the 40 year old tricks lol. One thing nobody has said anything about is most people over here are running the 44xs transfer port cover. I think you can still get the service one. they are both the same. Some people claim a gain with them.

                • Its an age thing. Jerry and I were talking and a lot of the Mod motor builders are advancing in age and we figured with this forum it would be a good way to pass on some of the tricks before they are lost and gone forever.

I thought this was basically a well known fact now. But I can see for newbies it might not be. Thanks Danny !!

As Eric Vanover declared when he found out you could purcahse and bolt on HP without ANY modifications, "How many can I bolt on !!!!"

I think you can still order these from Merc. They used to be be only around $20 - $30 but I imagine with everything else going up they are now closer to the $80 mark ? Just remember to locktite the bolts when you put them in. I have had some bolts work loose and let air in.

                    • Cats out of the bag!

Service covers' clipped off and the 44XS one is NLA.

I built the service covers up with epoxy and contoured them with rotary files.

On the ring thing - seems to me as if the drag from the ring(s) would be offset by the gain in compression. i can't really imagine the slight bit of tension caused by the expansion against the cylinder walls would be a performance killer. I used 15 overs cut down per Brinkman book on the top 2 lands and an OE silvery std ring on the bottom in my motor.

The new Moly coated Vertex are attractive but won't fit my old horse as it has small wrist pins.

                        • Here's a picture for you. They are blunt the way they come. With this stock setup the charge passes down and slams right into a flat wall at the end. The XS cover (all one piece) is contoured to guide the charge better thru the ports.

As Sam says, it's amazing what you can see by looking. I did this before I even knew there was an XS contoured cover. So much for discovering speed secrets!

And my motor as of this last Saturday. I finally got a clamp bracket coming, now we can make up the midsection. Set up now for a 4D-4 magneto, but I have acquired an 850 distributor and will use a CDI setup in the future.

                            • Might be a myth

The change to a new style port cover could be a bit iffy. Reason I say this is I know the winner well in 750MH from a couple of years ago and he told me that at teardown he found that he had installed one of the port covers upside down and it still had the beans to win the Nationals.

Next week when I'm in Florida I will stop by the machine shop and see If we can do a run of intake 44XS intake port covers. Should be fairly easy to make a drawing from the part and then do them on an NC machine. If folks are looking for them I will have a run done. I am down to one new one left. The last price I saw for the NLA part was $42.75. Added a photo. Also shown is the older style. Very easy to install on any of the later blocks.
