How 'bout we get that Sidewinder goin 63mph, put it in it's own class, and go do some racing.

Racing that doesn't involve 25ss recoils and Yamato coil wires and aftermarket pistons and JB welded lower units and duct tape carb covers and prop heights and rule changes and ......

      Back to the original post....

How fast does a 20 cubic inch Sidewinder go?

I sure like the idea of telling a new guy to buy a Sidewinder, but how fast does it go? Does it go 65 MPH or 70 MPH like the old Hot Rods did???

      Scott,
In anticipation of your speedy reply and sales pitch, I would appreciate actual numbers for this reply.

I called Sidewinder, they can have 10 that are race ready to me in 4-6 weeks. I'm told I don't need to send them to George. They'll even drive them to my house. I asked if they'd drop one off to your's but it seems they don't like you.
Troy that is BS and you know it. Speak facts not BS.

George charges 800.00? Really? I bet he will only charge you 600.00 and still be doubling what he charges everyone else.

And Dana I used to have more respect for you but if you’re going to start taking side with people the spew BS might have to change that opinion. Not that you give a crap about what I think about you, but I do respect you and your opinion. A small withdraw was taken out of your account for agreeing with Troy's BS.

          Mike,

I actually don't sell sidewinders. I am lobbying the idea that we support a new motor to help our sport.

The only speed I can give is a comparison on the race course. The 20 Cubic inch motor was raced on a runabout in Kingston New Hampshire and Milleville New Jersey. It was competitive with the restricted 302's of Jason Thompson and Mike Cook on a small course in NH. And competitive with 2 20 cubic inch Hot rods running 25SSR in Milleville. Ed Hearns 25SSR rig was still the class of the field in Milleville, but it has been for a couple years each time I have seen it raced.

I do not know the miles per hour but can tell you I have raced Jason and Mike many times with my restricted 302 which I have tested at 63 on the GPS in Round Lake New York.

          Hope this helps.....

            Don,

Troy may be off base with his $$ amount to blueprint a Merc...so that makes me off base with agreeing with that point. I'll accept that.

But it is indisputable that after buying a brand new Merc engine...the first thing you need to do to go fast and have a chance to win is "send it out". Is that really what SO needs with "new" engines. Is that what I would want to tell a new guy who wants to start racing?

If you disagree...so be it. I won't lose any respect for you.

            Dana

              Troy,
It appears you called the wrong number because the quantities you provided are not accurate.

There are currently fifteen (15) Mercury 15 "J/AX" engines in stock for usage in J/AX. APBA purchased 10 gearcases from Racing Outboards in 2009. There are six (6) gearcases left. Four (4) went with engines that were sold this year.

There were approximately 17 engines sold between 2008 and 2009. At the same rate APBA will have enough engines to last about 2 more years.

The Mercury 15 2-stroke is still being manufactured for export and if APBA gets close to depleting it's current supply, I'm sure another order will be placed.

Dana, were all good. A deposit has been made and you’re back to 100%.
I agree with you. No one should have to do that. But we have allowed it to happen and now we have this mess.

                  Sorry Scott, that doesn't help.

It seems pretty absurd that we propose a new motor be Approved into one of Stock's largest and most competitive classes with such little data/test results.

Lets face the facts boys. If you want to win the nationals you are going to have your power plant massaged. I don't care what kind is bolted to your transom. I will bet every winner this year is not running anything that hasn't been looked at and made better some how. We aren't racing para mutual like they do in Japan. Everyone who has posted here has had there stuff worked on. Lets figure out how to transition all the engines we have to work with. The economy may lead us down a different path to keep everyone happy. The sidewinder makes sense and we have a challenge and an obligation to find a way to fit it in with all the other options out there. What's cool is we can change things as we go along to accommodate for what needs to be done and makes sense. Mikey

Legalize it!!! YOU know what I'm talking about there MR Secretary. Just don't do it before Ocoee, after which do it....do it. Send it to parity committee before the nationals.

"Personally I could care less when they are ready. I own 8 Yamato 80’s the longer the better."

The determination to legalize or not to legalize should not be based on quotes like this. I understand all the examples and arguments on both sides. However, the simple truth is, is that one, Ed Runne, two, Ron Selewach, and three, Hank Runne, have worked hard to develop a great motor for the future of a dieing sport(the way we like it). High performance motors are not going to come from anywhere else but maybe 2 companies within the next 10 years. Do you really give the ONLY company that can provide these type racing motors a hard time in there fragile state. This whole prodject cpould be gone in the blink of an eye and you all know it. THEN what are ya left with. ANTIQUES!!! The ideal placement for this 20ci motor would be in the B class for optimal returns for the company make it through this next year. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

                        Mike,

My personal opinion was stated plainly here on HR. I would focus on legalizing the 20 Cubic inch sidewinder in the (BSR)25SSR and the 25XS class.
The Hot Rod is already in these two classes and it will not disrupt what is happening in those two classes now.

I did not endorse legalizing the Sidewinder in the 20SSH class. My view was to keep it probationary in the 20SSH class.

My position was to also legalize the sidewinder in the A Class as long as a parity committee was formed for the A class.

That has been my position consistently.

It will allow Racing Outboard to sell motors and allow us to see the racing comparison.

We can agree to disagree about my view but you came tell me what my opinion is.....

                          Scott,
Don't mis-read what I said. I was simply stating that the answer you provided didn't help my question about numbers/speeds. And my comment regarding "the absurdity of introducing a motor without data from multiple sources" had no reference to your opinions and was meant for the General audience...

I will be happy to agree to disagree and have a good laugh with you and Troy at the races any time! We are all doing what we think best to keep the sport healthy.

                              Scott,

He likes Beef Jerkey but I sent him 25lbs for christman trying to move up the list for a 20 boat but he said that's not enough. I asked him how much then and he said there is not enough Jerkey for that.

I sure wish Sweeney didn't eat that case of Jerky on the way home from WA last year....I never did see any of it.

I had to rough him up and put his arm in a cast in hopes that he couldn't eat and drive on the way home this year!
