Your plan is outside the box, but would give the new guy a definite direction.

    Ask yourselves a couple questions.

Who has a chance to have the best 102 in the country, or the best 80 or the best Hot Rod or the best 25xs?

Chances are if you don't own one you will buy one from someone that has two or more. So, if you don't have one now and you buy one for next season, in all probability you will have at the very best, a chance to own the second best motor. You have already started behind.

Let's examine Tohatsu, Sidewinder and the 302 Yamato. There is a very very good chance any of us could purchase the best one right now. They are in production and the best one is waiting for you!

I went out to each manufacturers website, well at least the ones referenced in this discussion. It seems that Yamato and Racing Outboards are the only companies currently supplying complete race configured motors. The other (2) suppliers would be Bass Machines and I guess in the case of Mercury APBA. Let’s not forget that the Mercury requires a key component which is supplied by Racing Outboards.

I have no issue with the 15 Merc however lets’ not bill a 2-stroke fishing motor produced for export as some new and readily available racing engine.

I'm curious, how many are in stock, how many do we have access to each year? Is there an agreement in place with Mercury? Educate me.

How much longer will the Merc 15 be available? I understand it as Mercury has no intention to build a 2-stroke 15 nor has built a 15 in the last 3 years. I believe the last batch of 15's came out of Canada, but they too have de-legalized the sale of a small horsepower two-stroke. Although my information is hearsay, it brings up the point where NOW a short, middle and long-term plan needs to be identified as to where the next batch of motors will be used for the J class.

I believe this is where the Sidewinder restricted will play a much more integral plan to the future than our discussions now where to place the Sidewinders. I my mind, this parallels the OMC A where it was used in J and A as the dominate motor and the Axs classes could possibly be phased out if the membership chooses to do so.

On another subject, I find it the greatest thing when talking to a possible newbie when they ask me "how do I get into racing?" I used to be able to say, here's a number for a new motor, here three/four options for a boat and the same for propellers. Good luck and have fun. Now I cannot say those things; I used to run a 302, now I run a 102 and 80 in CSH and 20ssh (BSH) respectively because they are still the dominate motor although they are long out of production. For the love of boating, stop approving rules that extend the life of those motors! Same goes for the OMC and Merc! If fact, approve rules that put the old, out of production motors at a LARGE disadvantage as opposed to trying the make the available motors faster.

Now I have to tell the newbie, well first get on your knees and then see where that can get you, then steal a few parts from over there and then send then over here... that's when the person looks lost and then I change the subject.

Hum............the last time i looked APBA/Propeller magazine was advertising NEW Merc 15's for sale? If you would pay your membership dues you might get your Propeller Magazine delivered again. In addition the Mercury factory thru their dealer network and hi-performance department has an endless supply of new parts for the engine. Heck, Mercury even offers a 'racers discount' through their hi-performance department in Oshkosh by Gosh Wisconsin! All you have to do if fill out a credit application which i imagine you can do with Heather's help and you can get parts at basically dealer cost!! I call that putting your money where your mouth is! All ya do is give a credit card number and the parts show up in two days on your doorstep! It's like magic!

As far as how long will the engine be available to APBA, who knows???? How long will Yamato, Bass or Racing Outboards LLC be around?? Heck, who thought GM would go bankrupt.

As far as Guido the killer pimp goes, he is right in that once the SORC brings in a new motor it has a long term obligation to make that motor the MOTOR OF CHOICE. This is why the SORC has to make well thought out calculated decisions in this area. See pages 56-58 of your rulebook on criteria for engine and class approval!

And as far as educating you goes, that is a lost cause. Riser and i tried that years ago!

Stay warm and don't forget the wet bar for the new trailer!

Ok, I'll give them a call. I'd like (10) units by the end of the month. COMPLETE RACE READY!

Your response is built around parts availability. Go back and read my post. I WANT COMPLETE RACE MOTORS!

Give APBA a call but remember you can't call collect. I believe APBA recently bought all the LOWER UNITS Racing Outboards LLC had available! So now all you have to do is stroke a check for 10 complete motors, which by the way will be delivered in the box to you! I bet Heather would love to sign for that UPS delivery! Ugh.

This is getting silly. It's the same cr@p every winter.

                      Go Matt go!

                      I'll take 11.

I just called, they have 4 1/2 Merc's on the shelf. They're missing a tower and lower unit for the 5th. They're expecting 2 more from Canada in a month and they can pull 3 back from Tialand if need be. They also told me I should send them to George. For $800 a motor he'll make it go fast.

I called Sidewinder, they can have 10 that are race ready to me in 4-6 weeks. I'm told I don't need to send them to George. They'll even drive them to my house. I asked if they'd drop one off to your's but it seems they don't like you.

The 14-J wins this round, hands down.

It was the "then, for $800 you can send the brand new motor OUT to be blueprinted after you just bought it" line that did it.

Lol....But i think George would 'race prep' three and a half engines for that price. Glad to see Dana is paying attention.

A little good natured banter with Troy always warms my heart on a cold winter day!

I sure hope Seattle is warmer and dryer than it is here!

Well it's at least not as cold as the rest of the country!

Seattle today. Mild, 50 degrees, slight chance of rain....basically the usual
