This is why I ask. I've used some race fuels that I felt I got better results from straight pump gas. I'm sure the AV Gas will pass the meter and be a legal fuel. But, my question is on the results side - will you be slower out on the race course?

Legal fuel?

Sean I have found the same results as you in my stock yamato`s .Most race fuels and AV gas have a much higher octane level than pump gas and hihger octane will retard your spark (like running lower timing) that is why guys cut it 50/50 to lower the octane. You could try bumping the timing 20 or 30 thou to compensate i have had good results with this at 100 octane but still a little off at 110.This does not hold true for my mod I ran full 110 at nats with good results. I agree, it seems to make my lawn mower "lazy" but doesn't seem to bother my chain saw.
This is one of the reasons I suggested the canned gas from the hardware stores as an option where necessary.
It seems like there is a market for mid grade non-ethanol gas at Stock races. Some entrepreneur could take advantage of this.

Legal Fuel at Grass Lake
We've been dealing with a very small number of places that will even carry "straight gasoline" for quite a long time now in MI. That wasn't such a big deal, since you still had a lot of options to buy race gas from a pump at select gas stations. Now, many of the race gas tanks are being drained and replaced with E85 (funny thing is that it's usally $0.01 more than the stations 87 octane, so who's buying it).
Needless to say, with MHRA holding this year's Stock and J Nationals we wanted to make it convenient for those who can't find legal gasoline or don't want to take the time to find their nearest race gas pump / dealer. This is legal race gas in 3 flavors to suit your needs. It will come in a 5 gal. can (which you keep) from the refinery/tanks and be delivered to the race site. Check out this link and place your order as soon as possible so we can get a better idea of how much we need to order from VP.

It seems that the distillation curves between lower octane and higher octane fuels maybe "part" of the puzzle. The vaporization end point of lower octane fuels are often around 400 degreeF while many higher octane race fuels often have EP's of 225-250 degreesF. So there may benefit to adjust your hydrocarbon chain length (distillation curve) in a Yamato that you run at 400 degrees CHT and low compression ... much hotter than engines with a water pump.BOPP

Back on topic.
Last year I wouldn't check fuel, a racer buys pump gas and he's (or she) is DQ'd, complete BS. This should have been at the top of the priority list at the national meeting. The meter set point needs to be changed to allow for oxygenated fuels or this will be an issue every year. Hopefully we get our moral compass back and quit growing food for our cars.
PS-it has helped business, water magically appears in the fuel system after seasonal equipment sits over the winter.

One problem you can see from posts in this thread people are having to blend their fuels more and more to be legal at races and still save money from not buying the race fuels. This opens up a can of worms for testing at races for truely legal rule book fuel. How many people are aware that you can buy digitron legal oxigenated race fuel? It's out there on web sites available to buy and race and it has been proven to win races with and the sad thing is the manufacturers tote it up that it will pass the tests! If you don't think some people in APBA stock are not running hot fuel think again. And alot of this fuel is worthless to protest against because by the time it is sent off to the test lab for testing the chemicals that make it illegal and make it win have evaporated off or are null to the test due to ageing. It's a waste of your $ to protest it. Stock needs a level playing field for fuel.Period! Find a way to do it. I commend MHRA for the option to buy VP fuel for the 2009 nationals. At least they are trying. I truely don't see how anyone takes glory in a win by running hot fuel. They are losers.
P.S.- Raising the meter set point only allows for more cheeting. You can run more illegal chemical without notice.Last edited by Tomtall; 03-04-2009, 06:32 PM.Tom L.

Along the lines of Oxygenated fuels, I drove by a shell today on the way home....Big banner out front says "New improved Shell 91 Octane with nitrogen"
Are they trying to fertilize the corn molecules in the ethanol or what?
