  • Legal fuel?

So, the time has come where in region 10 it looks like we will no longer be able to buy good fuel for the upcoming racing season. All of the pumps are going to be 10% ethanol.
I know that in other parts of the country people have been dealing with this already. So the question is what do you have to do to find/mix legal fuel for stock racing.
Also is there any difference in what you have to do to make fuel legal with dinosaur oil vs. synthetic oil.

    Thanks,
    Mike Perman

P.S. What about the winter nats. Are you going to have to bring/mix up your own legal fuel or will there be a fuel of the day?

    gas

I have been using racing gas from VP for the past 5 years. No problems and a small cost when you look at the total race weekend .

Divisionals, Nationals and speed records have to use zero alcohol gas, all others still can used the "fuel of the day" rule. No "fuel of the day" at Nationals. Your Divisionals are the only time you need to worry at your local races.

For Divisionals, AV gas and race gas should test legal, I don't know about Region 10, but in Region 4 the big chain hardware stores sell canned non alcohol gas for weedeaters and chainsaws, about $3 for 1/3 of a gallon ... but its legal and ... if you need it, you need it. On small classes this only adds $15 or $20 to a weekend of racing, its not like its $100

VP race gas (I buy VP C12) or AV gas. I haven't bought any VP in two or three years. Less than a month ago I checked the price of AV gas where I buy it - $4.999 / gallon. There's a place in Shreveport where 100 octane LL AV gas can be purchased 24 / 7 (self service). It has passed inspection every time for me (as does VP C12).

Do NOT plan on buying legal automotive gas at the Winter Nationals! I almost got disqualified years ago with automotive gas I bought in Alexandria. It was close - very close - to being illegal. Too close for me. (That's when I switched to VP.) I've seen several people get disqualified at Alex for illegal gas that they pumped from the same pump they filled their truck/van up with. Too risky.

          Fuel

Was this topic discussed any further at this years national meeting and if so were any changes pending for 2010?

            Gas

There is a airport just on the other side of the lake. Got legal gas there the last time.

              Mixing

I heard or read where someone was mixing AV or racing fuel 50/50 with pump gas and was passing the digitron. Anyone with experience here?

                  mixing fuel

Darren, I mixed it also last year, but it was with non-ethanol fuel. I hear it won't be around soon...Even up here in the north co.

I did it in Cali also (which has had the ethanol) and easily passed the meter................now, get off the computer and put that Cmod engine back together, so we can go testing!!!

Not all ethanol gas has the same amount of ethanol ... when it gets up to 10% mixing 50/50 might not be enough

There was a thread on here about this subject last year, where one of the oracles of outboard racing was dropping dimes of wisdom on this subject. Just as Sam (heck, maybe it was Sam) has noted, sometimes 50-50 won't overcome the ethanol. I think the recommendation was to work with a sample and the fuel meter until you found a ratio that read legal.

Looks like I need to score a fuel can for AV gas/racing fuel for divisionals this year.

I think Sam is right aout the 'fuel of the day' rule at local races, but here in region 10 we've always just used the meter...SO...unless you hear different about a specific race, I would make sure you have gas that will always pass the meter.

We do like Daren says, 50% pump fuel, 50% VP110 race gas, fossil oil for break in, and then Redline oil mixed 25-1, we pass every time.

You can however, play Russian roulette with fuel, we do that for practice. I've had Shell 91 octane test OK on the Digitron, I've also had Chevron test Ok right from the pump.

As Sam eludes to, the next time you buy at the same station the fuel passed at, it might have more oxygenators or Ethanol, or long eared galloot juice, it might be slightly heavier and/or and throw your meter.

If you keep checking Craiglist/E bay you can get a used Digitron for a fraction of the $500 new price and literally watch the fuel change week to week.

Do they use a different meter at Divisionals/Nationals? So, if you find a combo that works to pass the meter at the local races will the same combo pass at Nationals?
