Nationals

Just my opinion. To me first off its a shame what happened with the rain and flooding to cause the Nationals to be cancelled with so much work involved to get the event ready. A lot of the racers put out a lot of time effort and money to get rigs ready,time off from work etc. To have a completion of this years Nationals at another site does not seem fair to anyone from anywhere. The Nationals to me are where you race against the best in the country at one site and at one time. If you race at another site those that spent alot of money to get to this site may not be able to attend and to me thats not a way to complete the Nationals. Everyone looks forward all year to prep and get ready by tuning and jetting motors and fine tuning boats. Its more than just another race site. You may have seen something someone else had that you may now add to your rig etc.
I have seen in the past when races didnt have enough boats or whatever happened and no National Champion Crowned. This is my opinion has how it should be. Fair to all not just some.

Our Rules Allow For a Postponement

General Racing Rule 9 allows for the postponement of an event.

IMO we should agree to award another race site the remaining National Championships. I believe that to be the case REGARDLESS of where it is held. The APBA is in the business of sanctioning races and awarding championships.

If the remaining championships are not awarded, it has been suggested that it is only fair not to award HOC points to the two drivers who did win titles. I believe that it is unfair to the two drivers who DID win national titles to strip them of the opportunity to get into the HOC. One of those drivers travelled over 3000 miles for that title. They may never have that chance again.

Mother nature may have deprived some people from participating in our National Championship races. The APBA should not make it so that NO ONE can participate.

Dayton is Available

I have already spoken with my race committee for the Dayton, Ohio, race in two weeks and we are ready, willing and able to complete this event in National Championship-style if the SORC and the MORC so choose.

We would run all championship races on Saturday and recognize those who qualified at Whitney Point, New York, as being pre-qualified for this event. In the event there are not 12 drivers who register for the finals, we would then fill the field with open entries and run qualifying races if necessary. We would then run all SO, MOD and Junior classes on Sunday for records.

Our Caterer, banquet facility and trophy manufacturer are already on stand-by awaiting the decision of the SORC and MORC.

Big Picture

Those who rush to scramble to save the 2013 Nationals at an alternative site do an admirable job at looking at their own self interests but are being myopic in view of the big picture.

We are all in this together.

We had a Nationals, we qualified drivers, we crowned a few champions. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we lost our window to complete the event.

Unless you can set up an event that has the same players in the same classes that affords the same people to be there, it is not fair to continue the event. Vacations for many of us are over. Schools are beginning to start for the kids.

If the decision is made to continue Nationals, I am afraid that those who make that decision will be looking more at their own regional concerns and desires rather than the category's needs as a whole.

And it is that kind of decision making that drives people away: looking out for one's own needs than our entire group.

Bill: Your citation is incorrect. I assume you are referring to Rule 22(3)(a) on page 24. This is a Stock Outboard rule which is, as you know, inferior to the General Racing Rules. The General Racing Rules allow for postponements. The APBA President has already informed the SORC and the MORC that Rule 9 regarding postponements governs this situation and that the SORC and the MORC must each decide whether to hold these championship races at another site.

Furthermore, your analysis of Rule 22 is incorrect even if there were no GRR 9. Stock Outboard has held separate national events for different classes for many decades. The marathon classes (which are SEPARATE CLASSES) have never held their championship races with the closed course events. Further, we have permitted the 45SS class (a full SO Class, I would remind you), to hold their nationals at separate events. There is no rule that says that all classes must have their national championship at the same event and we have never done this in practice.

Ed, my mistake ref is rule 22.
The issue here is Postponement vs Cancellation.
Was the reminder of the event Cancelled? Or Postponed?
In either case how can it be rescheduled under another Sanction, on a different date and location and comply with rule 22(3) (a) (c). A postponement would be at the same location under the same Sanction.
But what do I know i am just an old retired aircraft mechanic.
question, when was the last time when a National event was cancelled after an incomplete running of classes on the Sanction and rescheduled at a new location/date and a another Sanction issued?.
The rule states only ONE National Championship during the year. We had one and the event was cancelled midway in the Sanction. It is OVER. Cannot have another National event in 2013.
I will argue that rule 22 is more restrictive than GRR 9 therefore, rule 22
stands.

Nationals

I think Patrick nailed it on the head....we in region ten have several classes (CSH, CSR, 200ssh) that have drivers pre-qualified. And, in region ten, we have three wonderfull race sites coming up that could hold a nationals size event if it were to come to that. Yet, not ONE of our drivers...not one..has come to me or Kyle Bahl or any other stock commissioner and asked that we propose moving the canceled nationals classes to one of our venues. I am so proud of our group...you have no idea. Ed...even if it is legal under stock or general racing rules...we need to take the high road on this. It is totaly unfair....TOTALY unfair..to expect anybody from the west coast to make a second trip east of the rockies. If this event were to happen...say at Dayton.. I feel that it would tarnish stock racing for many years to come...take the high road Ed. Respectfully, Dave

The fairest idea

I think you could put all the classes in a hat. Have a drawing for 50% of the classes on the east and 50% on the west. Just luck of the draw if your class comes up near you. Fair for everyone. We all have a 50/50 chance to run there class. WILD BILL ( JUST A THOUGHT )

If the nationals are to be completed, and I think they should be, this sounds like the fairest idea to do it. You could even split it in thirds, west-central-east.

How do you address existing sanctions? They now compete.

LaCrosse, WI PRO Nationals

Back in the day (late 1970's), the PRO Nationals had to rescheduled due to problems with the original venue. A couple classes ran out West and remainder ran at a race in Acworth, GA. Obviously, this was not what anyone wanted, but it was a reasonable solution to crown that year's national champions.

Let SORC and MORC do their best. It will not be a perfect resolution, but it will be good as they can do.

2013 Nationals

My 3 cents. I was there, what a wonderful experience with the taste of the regions, the powder puff auction, and the list goes on.I am or was qualified for the CSH finals. I feel I spent as much time , energy , and money as the other 11 that are also qualified. If the finals were moved in two weeks to Dayton, I have a conflicting schedule and would be unable to attend. Having said that, I have several racers in that same final that I can personally call friends and would be very satisfied if any one of them were to win the CSH final.( that would include any of those I do not know also) I would also be happy for one of the alternates to get an opportunity to take my place. The race committee did a great job in the running of the race and by no fault of their own had to cancel the event.( everyone gets that point) I feel there should be a 2013 CSH National Champion, and a Champion in all the other classes that did'nt finish as well.As bad as I would feel not to participate, I would feel even worse that the other 11 were not able to either. It's all about getting to the race course at 8 to find that your fellow racers had your back and got my equiptment to safety while I was 15 miles away at the hotel.( Howie Nichols specifically) For those that could not make the rescheduled race for what ever reason, that's life, there will be no solution that will satisfy everyone, NOT POSSIBLE! I just hope they feel the way I do and would welcome the rescheduling of the remainder of the 2013 Stock and Mod National's. I also feel that the conducting club with as much hard work as they did should have the first opportunity to finish what they started.
