    Wow

First, Beegle, i am not against rounded pickle tips, all of my boats except the older ones have have rounded tips, that covers about a 8 or 9 year span or so. It is pretty easy to do when you are building the boat new. To round them later is a PITA on a natural finished boat, but still doable. Oh, and yes, the pickle tips went through Mark Wheelers cockpit sides. No injuries as Mark was smart enough to jump forward upon impact. In my opinion, no amount of kevlar laminated onto the wood would have stopped penetration. Simple math really, mass will break the cockpit side off at the deck seam. Kevlar will then leave jagged edges for you to cut your exposed part on. We wear kevlar on our bodies though. I feel Mark would have been injured had this occured. As it happened, the boat absorbed the impact and dispersed the energy without a problem. With rounded tips, I feel Mark would have been driven out of the boat, as the rounded tips would have drove the inner combing into the opposite side. We will NEVER be able to manage risk to the point of no injuries.

For the record, Maybe the discussion should focus on how the saftey rules are implemented, not what they are. That is my main complaint, I thought my point was made previously. Obviously it was not.

Darren, the discussion about rub rails just fueled the fire for all the saftey rules that implemented without feedback from the membership. That is how the discussion got to rounded pickle tips.

Brad, I have been paying attention, why do you think I am raising my concerns ? I did not elect the current leadership at APBA, the board pickes the President... am I mistaken ? By all means, enlighten me. We as membership elect the commisioners for each region. They in turn elect a chairman for each category. We have little impact on the true decisions. Yes, we elect the board members, when was the last time that the largest outboard category in APBA had the majority of the board seats ? You might have to dig deep for that one.

Ever since the general racing rules were combined into one, the problems became clear. Each category is different enough to need different rules. It could be the mentality of the category members, or simply the need to define itself. I can honestly say I feel it is not working the way it is.

And for the record, I am NOT in favor of the saftey commision or committee, whatever it is called, to have the authority to implement a rule without first consulting the membership of the cargory it is affecting. And by that, I mean a vote, by ballot. APBA is preaching it is online now, set up a online voting tab on the website. Log in by your APBA number and a password. Sounds pretty simple to me. In addition, mail to any member who is not signed up online, a paper ballot.

              Rub rails.

As a stock commisioner..I feel I should know the rules pretty well....the pickle fork thing was discussed and voted on last year in Raleigh...and I had to run out and use my cell phone ( I own my own business) when the disscusion took place. I feel bad for all of the confusion at Lawrence Lake...I was just as confused as everybody else I suppose. Now that i have hacked the hell out of my brand new rub rails I need to spend more money and buy new ones. Somehow we need to fix the system....there were a ton of people that were blindsided by this thing. Maybe a conference call before the majority of the races happen to discuss rule changes that have taken place? Would sure make things a lot easier on people. Just a thought from the left coast. Dave

don't be so hard on yourself davey.... i won't be at mayfield as i still can’t bring myself to hack off the tip of my new JDS nose piece jon himself and i meticulously installed this winter.

numbers are down and participation is dwindling???? really?....

                  Pickles.

Bill...you promised me and the rest of the class that you would be at mayfield. The pickle thing is not that big a deal.....the rounded area is very small. think about it.

Don't feel bad on my account, the Pav could lose the weight. On the nice new 305 I built up the underside of the sponson with tape & woodchips, then trimmed out the edge real nice with color matching tape. I did not cut or sand any of the boat. That's the way to go if we're unsure that the rule will stand for this year.

So, i read and re-read all of the posts and still can not bring myself to cut my new boat until i can get a clear yes or no. FOR THE 2010 RACE SEASON DO ALL STOCK HYDROPLANE BOATS HAVE TO ABIDE BY THE 1/2" RADIUS PICKLE RULE????? (of course except for the j boats with their different radius) Please can someone have a clear and sure answer. (if one exists) Thanks all !!

                          Ugh

Well Bill...you really do seem like a nice guy etc. But you should not keep telling me and others that you will support a class at a race and then make excuses for not showing up. I understand the work involved, and the cost. If you truely do not want to run the stuff...sell it. If not, run it. Not trying to be an ass...but it's either or. A lot of us in D depend on people showing up when they say they are going to..hotel reservations. vacation time. etc etc etc. Just something to think about. If you are super worried about your boat, I have a boat you can use for the first race. Let me know.

the pickle "mod" is not that big a deal, but modifying the front cowl (nose) on a JDS to comply with the rule is quite a bit trickier...........glad I run my JDS in MOD, as it was built prior to the rule change date.......

ps: I bet Bill's real problem is he is scared to be beat by Tohatsu's!!!!!

                              Pickles

I am betting you do not have to do anything with the nose section on a JDS. Are you going to be at the next SOA meeting Darren? I need to ask you a few questions. Davey
