Alex who said that the new A sidewinder was slower than the OMC A motor?
I think the real worry is it is TOO fast out of the box. considering that no one has had a chance to dial them in yet.
And this is a legitimate concern considering many people feel that A hydro is plenty fast enough as it is. Plus we really do not want a mass Exodus of OMC's from A to 200 mod
I also think the Merc is a couple of MPH off of the OMC.

This concerns me too... too fast once dialed in and OMC on the verg of too fast now. Heck I'd vote to go back 10 years in speed... make OMC run the restrictor plate all the time. But I know the lynch mob would come for me. haha.

ROF Andrew I suppose we could just mandate bigger boats in AH and then let it sort itself out.

For example OPC elected a chairman that hasn't been in a boat since 1994 maybe 1996. Then has never even been in an OPC style boat. Is that an improvement from the former? Probably not, but its change.

                .
The last time was in a boat was 2001!! https://hydroracer.net/forums/images/smilies/boat.gif

sorry Adam, I wasn't trying to insult. I'm glad you are the OPC chairman. Who is filling your seat from region 6?

No worries. Jim Fox and Jerry Book were the elected commissioners for Region 6.

                        too fast

Please look back at my previous posts, there was intention by the SORC to allow the Sidewinder to run so fast all the OMC's would be benched, there has been no intention by Racing Outboard to sideline all of the OMC's.

The goal was to introduce much needed new motors and allow the exisitng motors to run as long as they run. 302 in C, Tohatsu in D, sidewinder in 15ss... these have all worked.

Andrew look back through some other threads you may get your wish, slowing down all of the OMC's to allow the Mercury to compete in A. You have elected a good number of Merc owners on your current commission. And it could be done as a safety rule. So you may have rubbed that lamp.

Under the current rules scheduled to go into effect in 2011 all of the current motors raced have a place to race. Another incovenient fact.

Saftey huh??? Use the reason that they are going to fast and it's unsafe? Might work...

These threads get massive... I try to follow them though, I'm likely on here as much as anyone.

I'm not an APBA member, I didn't vote towards anyone. I can't even follow how you guys do your electing, it's too complicated for me.

In the poll on here, I voted to keep the Merc 15 out of ASH. And I am proposing to do the same at the CBF convention. We are also proposing approving the Sidewinders as legal motors for 2010.

That being said, I still think the OMC is getting too fast and that the SW will need slowing down in a couple years, not to keep the OMC guys happy, just to slow the thing down. I hope that is being planned for within APBA as we're a small group up here and therfore are forced to follow engine spec and setup rules of APBA.

                              Slowing Down

There was a proposal to implement the K-Pro height, but that was rapidly dismissed.

I do not disagree that the speed is on the fringe, but I have to say I didn't see where there were many accidents due to speed.

Slowing down and racing don't exactly go together. Because we are a member run organization the is a huge impact from self interest. In other motor sports the sanctioning body makes the rules based on what is safe and what is marketable. The put the rules in place and the participants chose where or not they want to race. Our system gives everyone a voice. And our population of boat racers give the Mid West a very heavy voting block Region 6 and Region 7.

These are very healthy Regions and I have said many times that they cannot comprehend the challenges of Region 1 or Region 5 or Region 12 that many times combine categories to be able to host a race.

This form of government of our membership can make divides as each area of the country starts moving in directions that work for them. This can dilute our class population. It will also favor a Region 6 at the time of the National Competitions. As there limited classes contimue to attract new drivers and they are able to race against a greater number of boats each week the competition pushes to get faster and better.

As smaller regions grow they end up have drivers move into a multitude of classes or categories. Hence racing in smaller fields of boats and not getting the push to evolve.

Our National sanctioning body needs to move in a direction to promote a nationwide platform that will put more boats in fewer classes, reduce classes that are duplication and improve the chance that drivers we attract can compete in these classes.

I agree with what you say here 100% and have seen it personally (the voting) happen ..........and it will continue to do so, unless something is changed.........the smaller regions are at a SEVERE disadvantage in implementing changes or ideas to help them grow.........we are all ONE, isn't that right???????????
