All the previous advice is good, but with all due respect, you're only gonna get a couple H.P. from most realistic engine mods.
My advice: Get yourself an old "Wizard powermatic 25". This is an old antique motor once made by Mercury for Western Auto. It consisted of a de-tuned 30hp Merc powerhead. Next, get yourself an old antique Mark 58 (45hp) powerhead. (I bet you can already see where I'm going with this) With a little work the Mark 58 powerhead will swap directly into the Wizard motor. You'll need to use the old 25hp crankshaft in the 45hp motor to hook up to your driveshaft. You'll need some luck finding a couple of these motors. And it might be good to get some help from an antique engine restorer or racing engine builder. Oh, and one more thing, take it easy with the lower unit. It'll be running on borrowed time...
