Bills D Mod 44 project

The worst of the gleeps either scraped out or coated enough to be OK for use. Most of it is below decks.

Very close to completion now, hope to be able to run at Tabor City. Motor is just missing the bushings for the throttle bellcrank, on the way from Sea Way.

I still have to invert the boat and put the final touch on the pad. Found a local distributor for Foamglas insulation, $10.50 for a new bottom blocker.


Been a real relearning experience! still have to paint in the outline for, and the number (easy, 7F!). Also, add stars to the blue nose. I'll add an extension for the transom and test it a bit with my 40H!

local graphics place will make the numbers for about 20 bucks or so then all you have to do is apply them if your so inclines to get it done the easy way :<)

Rollout day!

Still a myriad of small details to attend to but I have the boat on the dolly and we were able to test run it Sunday (16th).

Seemed impossible to start with a rope so I set up my 1/2" drill with socket to assist the roper (grandson Haven, 14) to pull it over. Hey - - she fired right up!!


Did a video of the running later on, he's making a presentation for me. I'll post it later.

D mod

Not that what I say matters...but I would love to be able to run in the D mod class with my D Tohatsu..but the mod commission thinks otherwise...that being said, at some point in time open stacks like what are being shown are going to be illegal at any race site, and I know for a fact open stacks have caused venues to be lost. If it were up to me, I would ban them as of right now, make all mod guys run down tubes. It is just as fast, and way way way quieter. I personaly cringe anytime we are at a populated race site and somebody fires an open pipe motor up. If I were a local resident, I would be pissed at the noise. Just some random thoughts. David

I understand that there are a number of people that enjoy the noise open pipes make....but....we have to look at the overall picture...the majority of people that live next to the lakes we race on do NOT like the noise. It is a fact. We can play the macho B.S. all we want, but if we continue to lose race sites we are done. Just look at Pleasenton California or Lake Cullaby Oregon......I am not trying to be negative, but I just do not understand the rational behind allowing open pipes if they make race sites not want us. Just does not make sense to me.

I am sorry but Dave if open pipes are so bad and they get rid of them then I guess the limiteds and flatbottoms are history. They are just as loud or louder and are running open headers also..

Also you had your chance to run D mod at Banks and we asked you and you refused so that argument is not holding water any more! We would of let you jack the motor to the moon if you had wanted..Racing is racin.

Open pipes

I am not trying to create controversy....I am looking at the overall picture....the noise we create racing I would bet is the number one reason lake residents do not want us around. It is not a mod/stock/pro/inboard thing, it is what people hear. If the inboards need to run mufflers to keep races, I bet the do it. Ya, I could have run D mod at Banks Lake...but I do not have unlimited funds, and you had plenty of entries. And yes, there are venues that love the noise, but that is simply not the case everywhere. You just watch.....we will lose Silver Lake Eatonville and Lake Lawrence because of noise complaints. If that is not the primary reason given, you can bet it will be a huge factor. Just some food for thought. I would much rather run a quiet D mod motor at a race then not be able to run a loud motor. Think about it.

Noise

Ive more than gotten the hint that S.O.A. does not want anything loud besides those rotten louder crappy slow antiques or anything besides Stock engines ! kinda funny they get to run everywhere/Political/favoratisim !!!! sounds to me A.O.F and NBRA will soon be getting more new member's in the near future S.O.A. will soon only be 15 h.p. and C yamato's and the few D stock's! oh and those loud open Exhaust slow antiques ! good luck on that Region 10 S.O.A. A.P.B.A. survival plan ? Mtechmarine your boat and engine look great! wish we had more out here in the northwest !

I have thought about it..Give me the noise!!! I use to go to the Unlimiteds every year since I was 9 years old till they went to the whistle they have now..I never went again..Race boats to me have to sound like they are going fast to!!! Give me the Unlimited Lights.

Many of our spectators in Montana wait for the big loud boats that is why we run them in the afternoon...It has nothing to do with having the loud boats in the afternoon because of the noise..It is to keep the spectators around till the very end..

So if they were to change the mod rules it would make no difference since you cant afford to run two classes??? Then why the beef about Mod anyway??

If were are racing at a site like Scootney or Oroville I have no problem with open pipes. But...when we are at a populated site like Everett or Eatonville or Yelm it is just another nail in the coffin of outboard racing. You can say all the macho crap you want about how cool it sounds (it does) but the noise will be a factor on us racing there. I just don't get why why people that run loud classes would rather lose a race site as opposed to making their stuff quiet. I just don't get it. I would much rather have the chance to run a quiet D mod at Everett (or some other site) then not be able to run at all. Maybe somebody smarter the me can explain it.....david

Boat Racing

First lets start a new thread to talk about noise. It seems to me that all engines produce noise so at this point all were talking about is the level. Now we have stock racing and a group of "D's" are quite loud if I remember correctly. Maybe we can look at the the inboard hydros, seems to me they are all loud except for the wisper jets. Oh maybe we should look at the pro catagory. Seem they make some noise also. I think the bottom line in any motor sport racing is that noise is a great part of it. People that come to it enjoy the sounds of a high performance engine on full song.

The NBRA folks have done an excellent job selecting race sites that allow for great spectator events where noise is not an issue. The whole thing boils down to just a couple basic things. How you market the race and getting the local population behind the event. It is up to the race committee to work the issue before it becomes a problem. Yes there will always be folks that complain about noise but they would do it if we were running electric outboards.

Bill, you rig came out great. Hope were at a MOD race when your running it.
