44 pistons---large wrist pin
I have considered making a run of mercury pistons. Here are some stats for the pistons which i've considered.
These pistons will be exactly like the mercury 2 ring pistons(large wrist pin) with 2 changes;
1st. --- ring pins will be moved to one on top and one on bottom.(in line with wrist pin)
2nd.--- pistons will be available in std.-10-20-30-and 40 overs.
These pistons are already in racing engines today. Ring pins were moved from manufacturers specs.
With piston,rings,wrist pin and clips---price $69.00ea.
Will do these as i have done the 3 cyl. Omc's. Will need 40 to 50 pistons presold. Will have to make 100 min. As to keep price down.

44xs
I thought a set photo of a complete factory 44XS might help folks. This powerhead was assembled by Doug Kay and is setup in accordance with Jerry W. instructions. We are also building a second spare powerhead using the doner engine path. As we progress we will post some photos of the second unit.
If all goes well we might be running 2 44XS powered hydros in that I have a complete second rig. Can't wait to see the season start!

44xs electric start
Alan, are you planning to run your 44xs with electric start? If so, I have starter motors and the correct ring gear available if you need. Do you plan to race in region 6, if so, I'll make sure mine is in the trailer for those races.

We most likely will run without the electric starter. If time permits we hope to get up to region 6. We will be at Hillsdale MI hopefully for the spring and fall race.

Here is a video of the 75-H MOD running. The start appears late but we were the only legal boat in this heat.

This is an excellent thread. I can only hope that some one (or 2 or 3 etc) take enough interest in it to collect all the information and then put it into a book like the late Harry Brinkman did.
Contrary to what some think, there are quite a number of folks (kids, if you will) who really are good 'wrenches', not just 'plug-n-play' types. These kids are perfectly capable of building front-running 40s' and 44s' in both stock and mod. And.. they ARE doing it!!
Given the proliferation of police cars and highway speed enforcement... building a boat for racing is one of the few areas we have where there is some modicum of freedom. I love motorcycles...I've got several rice-rockets (rice-burners) which I can no longer ride on the street, lest I become a criminal in the eyes of the law. Fast boats are what's happening.
D-Mod is a terrific place to go race. The availability of T-bolt stuff is quite good. If you are 'the wrench' you'll find what you need. I'd only like to add, if you want a tower and gearfoot that is really bullet-proof, I suggest you spend the money for a Bass Machines unit. Ask the person who runs one.

Brinkman Manual
When I bought all of Harry Brinkmans parts I also have all his notes for a manual update. I will doing a revision of the manual and will incorporate all the information I find as I sort through his paperwork. We have done one update a year or so ago to include the Mark 40 we oppened up to a 44 cubic inch engine. I will also add some info on the TX444DK and the 75-H mod project.

Lest I forget... D STOCK hydro or runabout is one exciting class to run. You can be a local threat or a National contender in D. You can build a Merc or you can buy a Tohatsu and just go racing. Building a Merc surely is fun, if you're a gearhead or just someone who has that "I can do" attitude. Buying a Tohatsu might be the quicker way to the podium - only time will tell.
At any rate, D Stock rules give the person entering the sport something they can hang with. The word "stock" carries with it the idea that the rules are simple. You race against others with "stock" motors. So you buy the "stock" motor and go racing.
That's what D Stock is all about.

Exhaust Systems
Doug Kay has built a number of MOD engines for us over the years. All are systems are based on the Parker castings obtained from Tim K. One of the key issues that should be understood is that when pipes and filler blocks are installed they should be treated as a critical part. First and formost to get the maximum performance from the engine the filler block must be fitted to the block very carfully. Once that is completed then the exhaust ports and ports in the filler block should be matched. The idea here is not to create and steps in the flow parh thus creating a restriction.
After fitting then we make the filler block water cooled. The reason for this is that when the filler block is subjected to the exhaust temperatures it expands. This expansion can distort the block and can cause loss of performance and excessive wear. With the stacks bolted in place considerable forces can be generated when the filler block expands.
Elows must be fitted so that the ports are all setup so they flow freely and without steps in them. The waste water from the filler block is then ejected so that it cools the elbows.
I have added some photos of exhaust work. Some are from our 6 cylinder but the principle is the same for the 30/40/44 Mercs.
