  • MY thoughts on the Mini Most

I notice that this topic has started to resurface and a few folks have even built a hull or two. Let me be very honest and say that Im completely lost on the theory behind this possible starter/ fun class.

In my mind this idea has absolutely no place in racing, the key word here is "racing" we already have ASX - ASH & A Runabout, anyone wanting to go any slower has no business in racing! anything slower then the current "A" or "J" classes is a complete waste of time!

Im not sure what motor or speeds the Mini Most is supposed to use but the photos look like led sleds and in my mind a 30-mph heavy tank will not spark anyones interest.

Dan, the point or reason behind this lies in the desire to give people an option. One that doesn't require a dedicated race motor, as an affordable means to get nonboat racing people out on the water. they can use a motor to race on some weekends and still let them fish with it on non race weekends. a COMMENDABLE project in my mind.

      Mini boats

Dan, Perhaps the smaller boats are not a good entry level class. But they are a great way for some 7 - 8- year old kids to get some boat time. A small hull like that can be a great ride with a 9.8 hp on it. I started my son out with a 3 hp on a old 25ss boat, a friend of his went out in it -and now they are both running J hydro, and both are section winners this year. I have seen a few Dads stick a kid in a J and expect the kid to go out and race, the poor kid is lost with no previous time in a boat. I agree we have great entry level classes at this time. Lets support PRE RACE type packages to start the future Top Hydro drivers out on the right foot . J dad , Shawn

        Shawn,

With all due respect and this is just my opinion I disagree, this is "racing" not needle point 101 for little old ladies or child's play, yes I agree we need entry level classes but racing is racing and if parents have any reservations at all then they should not be involved in any form of racing.

Sorry to be so stubborn on this but I just don't see the benefit of a kid doing laps at 20mph or less kneeling in an army tank with a single horsepower motor.

I understand the theory but turning laps at 20mph is not racing! I just don't see the demand or the need for this super slow low end "racing" class

Dan , Perhaps I should have included that these small boats were not run at race events , but at the camp or at the antique meets. Let the kids have some fun and get some time in before the races. Shawn

              Shawn,

I understand for camps etc they would be just fine, I just don't see the need for anything slower then the current J / A classes to be on the line up at a sanctioned event.

oops!! this is geting off track , I never wanted to race these as a class. I just thaught they were a good spot for kids to get into the sport. As I said ,I think the J class is fine as is. If some wants to build CAMP boats and sell them finance a new race motor ,I think its a good thing. My son and I sell T shirts to help pay for his J hydro . I think this gives him a greater respect for the time and effort it takes to run. Shawn

dan as far as going fast. if you look at the bath-tub racers they are gettting some speed. BTW slow can be as cool as fast... if the course is SMALL enuff...
15- eighth mile laps could be kinda FUN even at 40 mph

Dan, Where are the new commers to the sport. I do not mean sons and daughters, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren. I mean new people. Where ever they are we had better find them or there will not be anybody left to read your website. Like it or not this sport is dying a slow death from attrition. We need a motor off the shelf that is affordable. We need a boat that a parent can build with a son or daughter. And all the better if it is made out of lumberyard material. We need to attract kids to this sport. If we get 10 kids on the water, 1 or 2 will stay and they will move up as they get older.
The important thing is to make it easy and economical to get involved in the sport.

Come on now lets be real, a boat that a parent can build ? this is not the soap box derby! the starter classes are already in place, what makes you think that a slower home made boat is going to attract new kids ? in most cases it would probably turn off the average kid when he sees a boat hammered together with wood and nails from the local Home Depot.

My point is that all these small low end classes were done years ago and did not succeed so what makes you think they will succeed now ?

The sport is what it is and "racing" = $$$$$ you can throw all the low end classes you want on the table its not going to change anything.

Former region 4 Champ Boat driver Harry Davis gave me my first ride in his Champ Boat back in early 1980 yes a champ boat with a Merc V6 on it, he tucked the motor in and told me not to hit the trim button suited me up and said Danny go have some fun take a few laps it was that day back in 1980 that I was hooked, my first time ever in a race boat I was not 16 years old.
