When I was racing J planing off was a constant problem. Back then we had unplugged OMC's (right after the 60-J era) with our own props. No matter what anyone did, they could not come within half a lap of Hauenstein. They did their homework and it showed. I got big very quickly and soon J was a real problem for me. I made the jump to A as soon as I hit 14. What I want to say is that when "Universal J" happened, I tried it again. This time, it was plugged motors and the two blades. At 200lbs, I was actually able to get one on plane! It wouldn't have been in first at Nationals, but I would have made the race. Isn't that what is important? I see so many J's unable to get on plane now and it just floors me. Granted, I know the 3 blades don't plane as well as the 2 blades did, but come on! I realize that the "J dad" wants to get his kid up front, and so do the kids. We just have to remember that it is a learning class. These kids can only race it for a few years anyway! Much like Greg's post, I sucked hind tit for a few years and it didn't seem to stunt my racing growth much. The J's are a great program and from what I have seen, the motors seem to be close enough. You did good Ernie!

LOL! Sax you ready for this. 1-2-3 Merc's 4-5-6 OMC's, at least for Saturday's races. That should give you enough fuel for another couple posts. Remember, there are a lot of story's on here that show that even though you were slow in J and maybe even a little frustrated, you got over it.

The best part is 22W(Ryan Burdick) who was slow in J is now the CSR National Champ for 2008 and Gunjumper(Greg Lyons) who always came in third to Chad Difebo and myself is now the 25SSR National Champ for 2008.

              Just an AXSH Observation

Most of the new racers or newer to the sport have the OMC's rather than the Mercs because they are more readily available in race ready condition and usually for a few less dollars.
The veteran teams with more experience seem to be running the Merc's

This point should be factored into the "which one is faster" equation.

Personnaly, I believe the Mercs have surpassed the OMC's, but not by that much.
              So
A good start, good boat, good prop, and good driving with either motor would be hard to beat.

We have several newbies in Region 6 & 7 in J and AXS with Mercs. A bunch of Inboarders just took delivery of 5 or 6 Mercs for J kids out east.

                  Agree with that.

                    Lawrence Lake

On the 1 & 2/3 mile the Mercs ran out front both heats, more to follow on a seperate post when I get Sundays 1 & 1/4 results.

PS, one was a Stillwill Merc and the other was one I did last year before George's help/info, (it was also run on a HARM built boat!)

Ed, If I'm not mistaken, the inboarders bagged the Merc (I don't recall why) and bought 5 OMC's. Gary Pond helped them at their Nat'ls to get them all together and running. Gary knows the details.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

It's RACING, not just another boat ride!

I heard the reason was they knew a good OMC can still beat a good Merc.

                          • Along the lines of J.....

There is serious talk between myself, Ron Hill and a few others about building a wooden sit down foot throttle boat running a factory FNR gear foot, i.e, and Ebay motor any brand under 15 cubic inches that can be had for a fraction of any of the dedicated race engines available. The boats will run either a keel to turn, so you don't need to mess around with a fin, or a design we are considering will be a shallow tunnel. There will be two seats, so your 8 year old can ride shotgun in a two person class. Maybe call that one Junior F or something....The advantages, first is cost. You will have a boat that will plane, as the seat will not be allowed less than 2' off transom, and being allowed to run without a restrictor will be a huge help. It most likely will occur next season, but we feel it is long overdue. For less than $2,000 yuo not only can race, but you can run your boat in rougher waters on family outings.

Anyhow, progress is being made on KT's new Dawe boat, the last prime coat is down, and base coat will be laid down tomorrow...Then it's tape, color, light clear coat....Tape, color, clear, etc etc....Neon yellow, neon red, neon green black metalic trim...The neon glows in the dark...Pictures from the San Diego regatta soon to follow.....

They looked pretty stout against the merc's at Grass Lake.
