more mod classes????

I was just reading the minutes from the Mod section of the convention and read about new classes being proposed: Formula D hydro and runabout? What would be the basis for these classes and motors? I believe Rick Bird proposed it, but know he is going though some tough family matters right now (my best wishes are with ya Rick and your wife!), anyone else know any details???? Just curious.....

The commission debated the merits and even tabled the proposal for a time in order to secure input from other members. After much discussion, changes and debate, the commission voted and accepted the proposed class. However, all new classes proposed in APBA must be further approved by the APBA New Class Committee. Here is where the proposal failed. I wasn't in attendance at that committee meeting so I do not know the arguments. Thus, the Formula D is NOT a new class for Mod this year.

that answers one question I had. The other one was what motors were supposed to be used? I "hear" it was the idea to have a class just for the 44xs Mercs, so they were not disgruntled by the new Tohatsu?

The class was to be the 44xs under stock specs. It was a duplicate class and that is why the New Class Committee failed it.

Already run dawn to dark at a race, stupid to add more classes when we should be combining classes to shorten the day and duplicating already similar speeds.

Who wants a stocker in Mod anyways................... not me.

I did not miss the point. I just don't want a pure stock race class in Mod. Seem stupid to add classes when everyone already complains we race to long in the day. Why not propose Formual D in stock as a new class ?

And if you are pissed off enough at the D stock rules, hang a set of pipes on your stocker and go Mod. I believe the Tahatsu is already a legal D Mod engine................................ in its stock form. It is also a legal Formula E engine.

In NBRA it is a a legal D mod (40CI) class. Also I believe your 44XS is a legal D Mod engine in NBRA and AOF. So tell me why we need to add another class ?? There are already a ton of options.

At most races here int he Midwest the Mod and stock divisions race together, which makes a long program and a lot of the time there is not enough time to get through the schedule on Sat and we end up going to one heat racing on Sunday, or at the least having a late day Sunday. Look at the USTS, they run off a half day program and can sell it........... and they do not cater to new classes being added very often.......................

IN Mike W. words I heard in the SORC phone meeting in easy to understand terms for everyone was that the Tohatsu should have six to seven boat lengths over the Merc out of the corner, that seems huge enough to me.

That is huge, you are right. I have serious doubts the dyno charts show that much jump, but if that is what was said at the meeting ... why was it allowed? Are you certain he didn't say 1/6 to 1/7th of a boat length? 6 or 7 boat lengths would be like the Mercs were sitting still ... the power would have to be about triple in comparison to make that much accelleration difference
