Dave, I'm not patently against something that could help clarify the spirit and intent of the rule to keep 1/4 straightaway runs limited solely to the use of competition boats. As I mentioned before, that is in fact the intent; and the reason we could not initially include it in the rules is that is that present process for hull registration documentation (well, lack thereof) does not allow an easy way to do that.

Also, let's remember that this is a Big Picture item: this isn't just as simple of thinking about Stock Outboard kilo boats...floaters, laydowns, etc. Whatever is done here should be something that can be implemented across all categories and classes that choose to recognize the quarter mile. I've never seen an inboard specific Kilo boat for example, although I'm sure Ron Hill has. But I digress.

So, getting back to Spirit and Intent....a sticky subject since it is based on subjective criteria, and as such leaves a precarious gray area for interpretation. But, it may be all we have.

Perhaps the best suggestion would be a combination of items, both objective and subjective: First, as previously discussed, limited run-in and run-out lengths of a specified maximum length to negate some of the advantages of running a kilo boat.

Secondly, add a Spirit and Intent clause to the rules that allows the inspector latitude to determine whether a boat is a competition or kilo boat....so that even if Guedo or Wart or somebody else manages to finesse their kilo boat around Lawrence Lake or Dayton and completes a heat, an inspector can look at the boat and declare it ineligible based on their knowledge and interpretation of what constitutes a comp boat and a kilo boat. Like I said, totally subjective and risky....but it does add to the Rule Book a black-and-white statement that 1/4 mile records are intended to be for comp boats.

We all know...and it appears from reading these posts, that we agree....what we are trying to accomplish here. Let's be grownups and make it happen.

Dude....this is what I said on like the second page of this thread????

Cmon man....when Pat says it we all listen

More of our rules should be written objectively subjective, like pickle forks.

      Shut up, Dean.

For the first time in almost 58 years it feels like people are listening to me. Let me revel in this delusion.

Simple Pat we have safety stickers already just a sticker stating that the boat has finished in the top three

Just because a boat hasn't placed in the top three, it is disqualified from participating in the 1/4 mile? That doesn't seem right. Placing in the top three isn't all that easy in some classes in some areas. I don't want to discourage anybody from participating in the 1/4 mi. Some may want to do it just out of curiosity, for the fun of it.

Personally, I'd say leave the rules alone or just specify the maximum length of the entry chute. That would reduce the interest in designing a specific straightaway boat.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

I think John has it right here. Keep it simple, no new boat rules. All you have to do is add a couple buoys and you accomplish what all seem to want. John Adams

I must say I agree with John.. Seems like some of the new classes in the last year were designed for folks that could never get better than a middle of the pack finish. Now you are saying these folks can not enjoy the record runs just for fun..

So...If someone like Pater, Clark, Vanover have a bad couple of races at the start of the season and theres a 1/4 mile run next...they wouldnt be aloud to run because they didnt get a top 3.........Lets sit back and think of how stupid of a idea that is. How about...You must run with a compatition boat plane and simple...end of story

If we're not careful, we'll get to the point where we'll have to define a competition boat. Let's not go there.

I have to agree with John here. There is a LOT I can do to a competition boat to make it run better in a 1/4 mile. Stop and think about this, a lot of the tracks are 1/4 - 1/2 mile straight aways before turns. If we go and define what a competition boat is, there will more interptetation than members.

And I agree with John, just so I don't have to agree with pat.... (joke)

                      • Great Idea

The 1/4 mile format is the best idea I have heard in years. I looked at the Devils Lake results feed at the APBA site, reminds me of the old days in Lincoln City. Way back when, there were no kilo boats. Just hairy setups on competition boats that went real fast.

I think I will make the trip in 2014 to check it out! Way to go Pat.....

                        • Don't put restrictions on participants like must have been in the first three. Leave it open to all competition boats. Allows for some unkown to rise to the top! Jack
