I agree. My point is that the pickle fork tips are legal and "safe" on April 30, but illegal and "unsafe" on May 1.
If it's a REAL safety issue it should be illegal on the day the "whoever" decided it is unsafe..
JEFF JEFFFF..... ya got things all bolixed up here. You need to remember that the flat-earth society is alive and well, oft misunderstood, with nothing if it weren't for benign intentions. A group without a secret word or handshake but instead a secret phrase, which, thanks to the Mars Rover Team, I have decoded it for you (please note it is said in unision: " Our minds are made up don't confuse us with the facts"
Now go out to the 7-Eleven and buy a 12 pack of Corona's - DRINK EM!! Thank the J-Com. Good! When you can't see straight go saw your pickles.. use a french-curve to mark em.

Reason: needed to add the drafting tool - french curve

Half inch or one inch. What difference does that make. You get hit by a sponson by either thickness its going to hurt. There is also no way with the gear we wear we would go to the hospital with a sponson in our side. I'm tired of carving up my boat!! Quit making these dumb safety rules, and I don't think it was the racers that decided this!!

Talk to Bob Wartinger about the data presented to all commissions about this subject. THERE IS ACTUAL DATA TO BACK THIS RULE. UIM data.

Yes but the UIM specs are different then the one that APBA adopted and much easier to conform to. There are two tip specs you can use in pro the UIM or the APBA one both are approved to race with. According to the J division minutes both will be approved to use in that division. UIM spec= Inch radius, one inch thick on the inside of the sponson 1/2 thick on the outside of the sponson and no middle thickness given.
Destiny is a matter of chance,it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.
Kyle,
UIM racing is very different than the type of racing we do. Their hulls have a wedge at the aft end of the bottom to help make the boats plane faster for the LeMans start. That wedge also has the negative effect of making the boat more prone to spin-outs. Being in a laydown, low center of gravity position also is attributable for spin-outs. In our racing, we usually flip before spinning out (not that it doesn't happen once in a while, but very, very rare).
Another factor is that the vast majority of their data was compiled for their Pro hydro classes, which due to their lighter engines and the driver location further forward in the boat, again primarily to plane off quickly, also contributes significantly to the spin-out issue. So the majority of their testing was done on boats going 90+ mph. That velocity is not nearly approached in our category.
A third factor/difference is that in order for a sponson to pierce a combing it must hit at close to 90 degrees or perpendicular to the combing or else it will graze off or at least reduce significantly the impact of the collision.
It requires nearly a "perfect storm" of very unlikely and rare circumstances in our type of racing, with our style boats, to create the scenario that blunt end sponsons will be any safer than pointier sponsons. In fact, in cases of a collision less than 90 degrees the blunt sponson may cause more damage than a pointy sponson.

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

Mixing APBA Rules with UIM Rules is a slippery slope.............i kinda think that if you live and race in the USA then ya do things the AMERICAN way. If ya want to go race in Europe or some other foreign land go live by there rules.
When in America, learn to speak English and race by APBA Rules is my motto!!...........
Most of us do this for a hobby and are not very happy with getting 'nick nacked' with constant rules dreamed up by 'do-gooders' with good intentions. As my main man Alex the Mad Russian says, "The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions".
Perhaps as Commissioners we should adopt a RULE that for every rule we pass we must eliminate two from the rulebook!!!!!! I would support that rule change!

I was t-boned at 80mph by a DSH; I had UIM sides and legal pickles; the other boat had legal pickles. When hit, the boat grazed up the sides (just like like its designed to do) and did collide with my motor. The other boat right side was destroyed, not by hitting the side of the boat, but by hitting the motor.
These silly tip rules/UIM cockpit side rules really work.
BTW, both boats in the collision are a combined 35 years old.
Some time ago my brother was racing in C stock. He was hit in a turn on the RIGHT cockpit side. The pickle penetrated 2 5mm laminations of Okume, his Kevlar cut pants and cut about 8" up his right thigh resulting in an emergency room visit, hospital stay and 6 weeks off work. Had the pickles been rounded the outcome may have been less damaging.

I Know a urologist who works out of the trunk of his car. He will come over and take care of your pickle problem. And yes, they will be shorter.

Is this item EVER going to go away or be resolved. I have been racing since the mid 80s...and I have yet to see something cause this much controversy....if all the people involved would have spent a like amount of time on promoting the sport as opposed to this crap we would have full sponsorship for all classes for the whole 2013 race season. No wonder why we are down to 300 people in the whole country that race stock outboard. Ya...300 people....one person in one MILLION races a stock outboard hull. Let's move on from this thing and start looking at crap that really matters. Sorry if I am on a soapbox. Dave
It will go away if the powers that be will leave it alone. We went from points to 1/2 and now 1 in., now leave it at 1 in. and don't change it every 6 mo. or a year!
