I'm not sure how much I'll run D-Mad this year, but we just did finish up the motor (a 3 year, slowly moving project). We are making 4 four blades, four different shapes to see how the boat handles the extra power.

But once we get all of the boats to the west side, D-Mad takes a back seat to these CSH's. We've go at lot of dialing in to do in a fairly short amount of time...

It's really fun having Jimi in the shop with me making the Oberto/Wayneco props. He loves data and repitching props, which lets me grind away. Sorry we can't show you pics of the half dozen that are all finished. Can't wait for testing of the new boats and props as the wind did not let us test this weekend. Working on a stack of new Dmod 4 blades now. They will work for Guedo or Daren and I'm sure they will be fast!

What is brand and color for the stain and I presume it is water based?

It was developed to stain exterior fiberglass doors and is called gel stain by Minwax and it is I believe Mohogony 509.. I probably have it spelled wrong but anyway after it dries completely I will install it and then a coat of epoxy, wet sand, and then coats of varnish with wet sand between coats..

I did this to our boat the "Bucket List" 5 years ago and it still looks like new.. It is my favorite stain and color so all the funiture I built for our house is the same color.

                      Is this it?

It is an oil based product. I read on this site or BRF that oil based stains are not to be used under epoxy only water based stains. Your success with it kills that theory.

Thats the stuff and our first boat is 5 years and going strong..If you read the spec sheet it says it has to have a over coat and epoxy and varnish seem to work..I have done it also on a C Mod last year and it looks great except where the hole is..Ouch

                          Stains

I am surprised that one works. I did a lot of test piece several years back with about all of the stains from the lowes type stores, including minwax.

Here is what an inboard restoration fella told me.

You can use Oil based stains and cover with West System. The trick is to let the stain dty completely and then sit for a month or two to let the Oil evaporate, then it is good to go.

In my test pieces I did, I found a couple oil stains that West did not like, and the strength was gone. It still covered, but the tensil strength was not there. So if you are using West as a coating, with Oil based stains, it will cover, you just won't reap any strength rewards. And I did find a couple that it flat did not work with. Best to do a test sample before doing the whole boat. Looks like Mike found a combo that works. Looks nice too.

Did research on stain compatibility when I refinished my old Sorensen... one company has a pretty extensive database on West System epoxy adhesion to various stains, URL is http://www.epoxyworks.com/21/index21.html (then click"Epoxy adhesion over stains" link on left).

Based on data on above site, I ended up using the Minwax waterbased stain - worked great... They gave Minwax Gel passing grades too so Mike safe there.
