The first gearcase pictured, the bare aluminum unit, is a modified KG9 style, sandcast unit. The GREASE fill screw is located on th bottom of the torbedo. It is not a drain plug. The Black gearcase is a later style MK55H or 35SS unit. It's GREASE fill port is located on the side. Both units have the vent screw located in the same place. The later style unit was designed to be run with most of the unit, in particular the toprpedo above the surface of the water. You'll notice that the water inlets differ. The single hole located at the top of the sked affords more elevated operation without compromising engine cooling. Again, the units were designed to use GREASE as a lubricant, and the use of oil only shortens their life. Ask me how I know this. R.T.

Hey thanks for the info. so aaahhhh....How do you know this?..lol The seals inside seem like they would be orientated more twords a thinner lubricant than grease... but interesting

Someone recently told me they recomend grease instead of oil in a Merc foot; what type of grease do you use?

Synthetic gear lube and STP....50/50 blend......flush after each days run'n.....last 10 years.......100N/Steve

Thanks Steve, ..Is that the deal?..you pump gear oil in until it runs out the drain hole clean? This is my "Rickie Bobby" motor I built it to learn how to go fast again... Bugs said he's going to tape a cereal box/bag to the side labeled "Colombian Bam Bam" and a small letter reminding me not to snort the lucky charms...lol... Alan's boat, Too bad that we don't see Alan anymore I always liked that guy. That green boat is a sharp ride, what are you guys asking for it?

As said.....let drain overnight (old style case in first pic)......fill from bottom till lube comes out top,.....put screw in top first.......cap bottom quickly.

Give Alan a call.....would like ta sell complete with trailer....but if boat sells....he might keep trailer for work/camp'n.........Steve

Here is a pic of the whole motor. It is 100% stock...witch makes me wonder...is this a legal D stock? the production date of the powerhead is 1974

I wanted to mention how impressed I am with the parts and support I received during this project. IAI for the XS towerhousing super nice tower, plenty of room to get to the Gearfoot bolts. Allen Brown's steering bars are second to none..Its exciting to see a box from Allen show up in the mail because whatever is inside is SWEET! Mark and Fran Johnson Here in Honeyoye NY have a process for restoring the Mercury gearcases that is better than they came from Mercury. Amazing craftsmanship. Pat Davids, and Dave Scott were a giant resources for information and although I was distracting them from there own projects by calling them, They were always happy to help. Anyone who may be "On the bubble" about a project similar to this should know that you could not be in better hands than the ones that are available right now Thank you all for helping me.
