  • To Much To Fast

Here is a tip, don't change to many things at once, you will never know what the real fix was, or what the real issue was. Small changes, test, record data. When I say record Data, you should have a notebook you keep under lock and key with you at all times when testing. Record everything. I made a testing data sheet with blank lines you record everything you need to know. Speed is only one of many many things I record. And no, I don't use any gadgets to record certain things. I did install a tach last season though. Good piece of equipment to have.

Other than that, you really, really need to tach your engine before you make the changes to the pipe. Do what Top Gun said. He knows what he is saying regarding this. It is true for most mod engines. If you don't have the data bank to pull from you need to build the data bank. Tach it and adjust your carbs at WOT with a GOOD test wheel.

P.S. - I believe Mike designed and welds the pipes Lee sells. (Pro350Hydro)

That system has always been a bolt on and go. A high speed needle adjustment is all thats needed. I designed that pipe years ago using- Two Stroke Tuners Hand book- making small adjustments to evolve into that design. It holds a Kilo record and a competition record. I was having the pipes built in Neveda but my source has become unreliable. So I'm not offering them any more. I still have a 102 header system in stock.

      • I would adjust the motor at the beach but now with the new cooling system the motor gets no water till I am moving.

How many of the C Mods out there are Laydowns? Just wondering. I am taking notes but I will start over after I get the motor running. Time to go install the tach now

Get yourself a bilge pump. These are cheap. and an inexpensive 12 volt battery. We use this to break in engines as well as tuning.

            • Standard

A bilge pump is just about standard anymore in boat racing, not many gearboxes offer a water pump. The old Merc's and the Bass still do.

One more tip, don't tach it in a test tank. The test wheel throws water everywhere if the tank is not large enough. Meaning a simple 50 gallon drum, or a old heating oil tank, etc. Back it into the water someplace and tach. That way the water goes away from the boat. Oh, and you may want to zip tie the bilge pump to your rear handle so it does not get into the test wheel. Hook it up to the battery, and let it fill the block full and begin pumping. Start the engine plug the battery back in and let the engine get to temp before you tach it up and set the carb.

              • What is the difference between using a test wheel and a prop?

                • prop vs test wheel

Test wheels just make it easy! Theres no thrust so u dont have to hold the boat, and it allows the motor to turn up to max rpms so you know when its screaming! Dustin TOPGUNRACING

                  • Test Wheel

Be careful, though, that you're on solid bottom when using a test wheel. Muddy bottom can get all stirred up from the radial disturbance of the wheel, and then you can suck mud and nasty stuff into the cooling system on your motor. Keep an eye on the outlet, that its streaming clear water.

                    • For right now we will just have to use a prop for set up. Bilge pump will be here tomorrow. I would like to thank everyone for participating in this post and with the PM's and phone calls. I think we will have better luck this Memorial day weekend.

I am anixous to give her another shot. I will keep good notes and one change at a time, fore sure.

                      • Here is a bit of advice The props will give to a lot of thrust and you will need someone to hold the Bow. If you use a propeller you will not need the bilge pump as the prop will throw a lot of water into the pickup.
Now to do it safely. Buy a test wheel. Same as we used to have 40 years ago from Mercury. Tom Johnson sells them. Also buy the fitting from Tom that goes into the brass plug just below the steering bar. However, The later 302's the boss is there but not tapped. Tom can install one for you or you can drill and tap it yourself.
The flow out of the Pump goes into the the fitting. Now the Key and important is to Duck tape up the gear case water inlet. If you do not do this water will just go out the gear case inlet.
Be sure that you tie the Bilge Pump off with a lanyard because it will float around an get into the test wheel.
Hook all this up and activate the Bilge Pump and insure you have a good flow of water out of the motor water discharge hoses before you start the motor..
I have a complete set up that I am not using that I will loan you. I do not want to sell it but you can copy it what ever.

I have done everything you have mentioned except hook up a bilge pump. It will be here tomorrow. Should be in fat city when I get it set up for the water system that is now on the motor.
