  • Last year I was upset to find out the motors I bought were being phased out. But now that we have finished our second year it makes no difference to me now that I have decided if I want to run a second class "RUN MOD".

Strap some pipes onto your 80 or 102 and have fun again.

No, what did we do? We approved more aftermarket parts for the OMC.*****.
This is what should have happened and is exactly right about what went wrong at the last annual meeting.

The Merc should have been left in place because it is available and in production; the OMC should have been restricted (as we know it can be) so that it is not unbeatable; no new parts should have been approved for the OMC and a resolution of support for the Racing Outboards A engine should have been adopted.

The decisions that were made with respect to the A Classes were totally inconsistent with any particular plan for this class. They made no sense when considered from an overall planning strategy.

So, are you proposing that the AXS class be eliminated?

Or are you proposing we have a A Stock class that is slower than the J category class AXS once you ad the lead?

            • well Scott he sure didn't SAY that. But.. yes that IS what the result would be.

                • Ed is exacally right about approving replacement parts for the OMC. At last years meeting the SORC approved the new 30 over pistons. After many racers bought and replaced there engines with these pistons. Many found out that there engines would now not meet minimum cc's. This was due to the domes of these pistons being higher than the old oversize pistons. This sent racers running around looking for new heads that were larger so they could meet the min cc's. My question is this. Did anyone ever have these new replacement pistons checked? I was a commisioner the previous year and i remember having discussion on making sure these would be equal replacements. As it turns out it looks like they were not the same. What if a new racer had done this swap and didn't have the resourses to get his engine cc'ed and was thrown out. Having the cc's checked on a A motor is not the easiest thing to do if you ever been in inspection and seen it done. If for some reason you have replaced your oversize pistons in your A, J, or AX OMC or Johnson motor and haven't had yours checked i would encourage you to do so. Anyway just more food for thought. Mikey

Lets' hi-jack this hi-jacked thread in a different direction now.

                    GLM is junk, period.

Make sierra pistons legal also! I looked at some GLM A pistons recently and I don't want to (wont) put GLM's in my engines...my marine parts distributer had such bad luck with GLM they wont carry anything GLM any more...

Here is what was presented to the commision, in regards to the GLM decision.

Mike B.- Your marine distributor is one of very many in the states. Yet to hear of a GLM ring locator pin falling out like the OEM piston. (sound familiar?) Sierra pistons will not be approved!

Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.

True parity is one motor per class.

While "run mod" is always the short, easy answer to the question of engines being retired due to attrition or voted out by committee, I have to respectfully disagree with anyone who argues this position with a straight face. The idea of running an engine that has been freshly obsoleted in favor of newer, faster engines taking over it's stock class and pitting it against highly-tuned, seasoned, even faster modified engines is ludicrous, and in my opinion, even slightly dangerous. In my humble opinion, stepping up from Stock to Mod is a consideration that should not be entered into lightly.

As for the Stock engine discussions, let Sidewinder develop at its own pace in its projected classes, and see what it can do. Let the Mercury 15 run with the OMCs in A and continue to be tweaked to increase its performance. Let OMC 15s, the Yamato 80s, and 102s be. (There are plenty of them out there, and they're still going strong; for proof refer to Donny Allen winning Nationals and setting a new record with his Y-80.) And for God's sake, let the old engines die in their classes from attrition rather than because of all of this petty and senseless bickering.

The new stuff is on the horizon, and in a few cases already here. When it can hold its own with the old stuff and start beating it, the old stuff will go away on its own.
