  • Thanks Mike,

Do you take the boats balance point into consideration or is the boat to fragile at this point without the deck on it to make that determination?

Combing this site and the hull and hardware list I only see one kit builder/seller. Am I missing something is there really only one?

Raymond, the only real kit person and a great guy to deal with is Darrell Sorensen in California. He has a nice web site. We have one of his kit boats and my daughter runs it at every race. She just moved up from novice to the 20 class.

Also I don't really worry about CG in a kneeler since the biggest factor that controls the CG is the driver and they can move a lot. A laydown boat is a totally different animal.

the driver does not determine the CG of the boat, rather the CG of the boat determines where the driver is..........

So a driver can not determing where the CG will be. True it is designed into the boat or plane but I guess you have never worked with CG on airplanes. Moving cargo around in pasanger planes has a big effect on an airplanes CG. They work to keep the load where it was designed but you can change it with weight placement in our hydros! I don't think that the CG of our hydros is 2 feet in front of the transom but that is where everybody trys to put there weight in a kneeler.

When dealing with a kneeling stocker like a Yamato 302 that puts out 33hp, the driver has to do everything he/she can to get the boat out of the water to accelerate faster. However, CG plays a big role in handling, etc. And, yes you can play with moving weight around as many people that have to add weight to make the minimum weight can make their boats work better than say a driver that is at minimum weight and doesn't have to add any. This is because they can choose where to put the weight and is not forced to all of the weight (driver) being at the back.

              • How To Find CG

Cg is very important to a build. To find the CG on your boat:

If feel it is stiff enough to do now,

Place two stands beside the boat. Place a rod strong enough to support the weight between the stands. Put your engine on the boat. Rig it, or at least set the rigging where it will be.

Now then, get help, set the boat on the rod, moving until it is balanced. This is your CG without you in it. Now then, get some help again, get in your boat on the rod and have someone adjust until the boat is balanced.

This will let you know your true CG and balance point. Your bottom break is determined by this balancing point, and I am sure the factory took that into consideration when you purchased the plans.

A rule of thumb on dash boards is to place them just behind the sponson back cross frame. Just a rule of tumb though, everyones weight is different.... testing will help you decide exactly where if needed to move.

                • Mike, thanks for the tip on kits.

Dave, what do you mean when you say bottom break? Is this the stepped feature you see in the bottom of some boats?

                    • Break

                      Raymond,

It is where the bottom begins the lift. Typically behind the sponson back. Basically where it begins the break and ends at the front leading edge of the boat. On your boat the Bottom break will be right around 12" - 15" behind the sponson back.

                        • Dave explained what we do to a T. Have balanced some boats on a rod no bigger around than a pencil. On the runabouts, that is how we deteremine where the fin goes.
