    Very impressive

    Doug Wellings is my next door neighbor. He picked up the motor at the Nat's. They are great looking motors. We put it on the scales 60lbs, awesome! I helped him get it on the water this weekend. I figured it would be quite an ordeal, but I was pleasantly suprised. It started on the first pull!! I thought it was a fluke....we put it in the water to break it in, first pull again! Timed it in about 15 minutes following break in and raced. It started first or second pull every time and idles out onto the race course! We did lift it slightly, just enough to open the exhaust in the tower, but did not get the prop out of the water. (just picked up the steering bar) I could not believe it! The motor was great, I am really excited about the future. I can not wait for the 20C.I. to be available for my 215lbs. Now the other side of the coin, the GPS was not great 56+/- and we did try a few props. We will keep working on it and I am sure drive the number up. My first impression is GREAT and I am excited for where I think these motors can take us in the future.

      Tom, The gearfoot is the same one used on the "A". Same skeg that meets all the "A" specs. Much safer and easier to drive than the current "B"(15ss)

        Mr Kargus... what does "loquacious" mean? Your probably referring to my long flowing hair or my lack of dancing skills! Either way, the skeg on the Sidewinder is spot on and full of control, I've never found any play in the straight away or slop in the turns. I backed her up in turn two heat two simply pushing too hard, it was in no way caused by the skeg or foot. GL

              Skeg size

              Thanks for the info John. I hope you’re feeling better. I agree the that “A” gear foot appears to be good at speeds under 60 mph but how will it perform at speeds over 70 mph when used with the 20 cubic inch Sidewinder? At times we ran longer Mercury skegs and although it may have been a touch slower, it was a lot better on the course. Maybe the Sidewinder may need different skeg lengths depending in the power head displacement?? Could this be an option with the lower unit castings?
              I was very impressed with how Greg and others ran with the Sidewinder and look forward to seeing more of them on the water. Also, it looked like a motor that you don’t need to be an accomplished mechanic to work on, another thing I liked about the Yamatos.

                  I was the test driver for the sidewinder factory and the motor is absolutely flawless. The motor will start first pull every time in the water and there is now no bog in the turns or any where else on the course and the top end is right in the ballpark. My opinion it is one of the best motors stock outboard has to offer.

                    I think by looking at it in person and watching it run, it is a sweet motor, BUT, it needs a few more cylinders...........

                    I spent a good amount of time talking with Ed and Ron about the motors at the Nats and am very impressed............TOP NOTCH equipment! You gotta love the use of spendy ARP hardware!!!!!!

                      Are these hydro's or runbaouts? I'm worried I'll run out of boat in ASH... sounds like the sidewinder is as fast as the fast OMC's or faster out of the box... so in a year or two once dialed in will be much faster again... 60mph here we come?

                      Or is the intent to slow it down as it gains speed? (regardless of the OMC being used or not...) Just let the motor evolve?

                        My dad, Steve Wilde ran it great on my sisters "A" hydro. Her boat does not run with much tuck. The Sidewinder does not like the engine tucked much (we ran @ 3\16 tuck) and does not seem to like inset transoms either. Next step is to try it on the flat turning runabout.

                          The plan to is to keep ASH speeds at or below current speeds. No one wants a 60mph ASH in Stock.

                          Pretty much same idea for ASR...keep speeds where currently at.

                            Glad to hear that. I don't want to go much faster in an open cockpit every weekend. It's one of the reasons why I tried inboard racing.

                              They will be able to control top end speed by restricting maximum timing.
