The "Hustler - Hard Roller Racing Team" was my father and his friend back in the early 70's. My Dad was Randy Johnson (Z-11) and used the name "The Hustler" (which he got from the excellent motion picture with Paul Newman). The other member was Harry Schiffman (Z-33) who now lives in Manteo, NC. His boats were called "Hard Roller" named from the hard wakes we always run in. My brother and I still have one of Dad's D Alky Marchettis, "The Hustler III". Harry I think I heard donated his boats (in pristine condition) to a local boating museum or shop or something like that. They were almost all Marchettis with the exception of Dad's A alky which was a Schultz from Austria.
6-J was Charlie Seiple CU & DU. 134-J was Dean Kuzminski. 4-J was Dave Schubert. Broom was also 10-J & Ed Pomphrey was also 49-J. Vinnie Hilsen was 2-J before me & now it's Stacy. 62-J?
John Runne
2-Z
Stock Outboard is all about a level playing field.
I remember seeing them run at Hinton in (I think) 72. I have an ex brother-in-law whose favorite movie was The Hustler. He occasionally hustled at bowling alley pool halls. But he never had his thumbs busted.
Laurie:
Wasn't 97-J Dizzy Dave's "Real Lemon"?
Zip Gallagher's duck-billed Austin Craft- 57-J...
Broom's 34-J "Orange Crate"... Harry Austin - 33-J
John: did Broom also run 10-J? I don't remember that...
Whiskey's 45-J... dark green with gold leaf numbers - beautiful!
I ran into Ed Pomphrey at the local 7-11 the other day. Hadn't seen him in years..
his hair has gone all gray, but there is not single line or wrinkle on his face. He looks
like he's 25 years old!
