Daren, excluding someone from constructively adding their thoughts is not helpful. Nor is the attitude that some racers seem to have that "boat racing owes them something".

There is no clause in the Stock rule book that says a motor should be allowed in as many classes as it can be stuck in to add more racing for the owners of that motor.

Racing a rig 2 or 3 times a day under different rules is not always helpful to our whole condition ... it makes the days longer and reduces the pool of volunteers (badly needed volunteers) necessary for each of us to race. Racing in 5 or 6 classes at every event you can, is definitely selfish (unless you have brought enough crew with you to pull your share or more on the judges stand and patrol boats).

What it comes down to is ... we need your help ... everyone's help. If you can't make it to an event to race your equipment because you can't take off the extra days to travel with your rig and set it up and break it down or your boat or motor is busted and being repaired or your varnish needs another day to dry ... please come anyway. If you can only get to the event one day out of 2 or 3 and its not worth it to drag your rig for a single race day ... please come anyway. We need everyone's help.

As they say, if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

        Jeff,
I agree, its to bad the steering committee did not publish an outline of its plan for Stock Outboard. It would have been helpfull to know 3yrs ago what motors they planned on droping when the new motors became available.
The steering committee has had a plan, it was published in Propeller last year some time. It is available to anyone who wants it. And for everyones information, the deadlines have done nothing but move back further every year. At this rate no motors will ever be eliminated.

          different opinions/viewpoints have merit

To bash other viewpoints because the poster does not race in that specific category, or a certain class in that category, is very short sided. More often than not, some of the best ideas come from folks not specifically affected by rules or changes to existing rules, as their thoughts are not cluttered or biased by emotion.

Whatever you think about someone elses opinion, they are all BOATRACERS opinions, either current or retired, and there are not enough of either to throw anyone elses thoughts away simply because you disagree with them.

I speak with personal knowledge and experience, 50plus years worth.

That is why for one, I disagree with Dan's admonition about dissent on this website. NOBODY agrees 100% of the time, but much good usually comes from discussing those differences, even though it may get heated at times.
Unlike the quote Dan posted about the "internet" most of the folks with strong opinions on this site, do not hide behind fake names. I would agree anonimity can cause problems sometimes, but I do not see that as being a major problem on this site.

Those who do not encourage dissent and open discussion, by ridicule or plain censorship, are in the news everyday, and not the good kind either.

          End of sermon.

If I was planning on getting my son started in J next year,is there any plans for the future on restricting the sidewinder as a J motor.I know if he were to start next year it would have to be omc/merc,but are there plans for this.

Dan's admonition is not about dissent, it is about name calling and general rudeness.

Dissent is OK by itself. We don't need to agree on everything as long as we agree to be polite.

before I listen to you again ranting about something that you have no vested interest in Sam....let me clarify..................everything you have stated, I have done!! Your statement about racing in 4-6 classes being selfish is not true! You think just because that racer enters so many classes, he/she does not contribute elsewhere?? You need to wake up, cause they are contributing! I can guarantee if you are trying to direct that towards me you have NO CLUE!!

there is a reason why stock issues are voted on by stock members, mod issues by mod members, etc...............because they are involved in these classes!

Word on the street is the J Committee and Board of Directors are quite happy with the current "motor program" and plan no changes.

Of course as the SORC has shown us, everything is subject to change.

                  Cheers, or is it 'eh'

I do have a vested interest in Stock racing ... I am certain there would be no Mod racing if there were no Stock racing.

I'll repeat myself: we are not in this alone, we all need each other

The bottom line is that the Merc J motor falls into line with the J and SORC plan to have currently available production motors for each class. In other words the Merc will be the J motor of choice for MANY years to come IMHO.

                          its all good!!!

boy, if you guys think things get heated here.....you ought to attend a J class committee meeting (more like a little league game)!!!!!!!!!

we all are very passionate about our "hobby" and everyone has an opinion, be it good or bad.............

the SORC has a very DIFFICULT agenda ahead of them in the coming years and will take an incredible amount of heat for their actions, but they are there to do what is best for our "hobby"..........................hopefully...

on a good note..............these actions should help the Mod category grow even more!

I would say if a discussion on this web site was a factor in you quitting boat racing you wasn't to interested to start with. As far as elk hunting you couldn't pay me to go and no I'm not against hunting or guns I just have other interest as you do.
