Gents, to answer a few previous questions:
Top'O Michigan Marathon is the 2008 Stock Outboard Marathon National Championships. IT is a 2-day event scored like 2 heats of a short course race. It is for runabouts only. "JR" and AXSR run a shorter course than the regular full-sized boats but it, too, is considered their National Championship. There is no official National Championship in the Stock Classic division. Matter of fact, I don't know of any races or national points ever awarded for Stock Classics. However, Darrell Sorensen was the driving force in creating this sub-division of Stock Outboard and this may be the start of a new era in outboard racing. I want to be part of it. APBA rules that apply to Stock Outboard racing will also apply to the Stock Classics that register for the inaugural race at Top'O. Boats must meet safety requirements, drivers must wear appropriate safety gear, be licensed and registered, etc. I think there are NO weight rules. It isn't REALLY a National Championship for Stock Classics so I'm not sure if a driver might be allowed to "join APBA" for a day. I want to encourage new marathoners and particularly new racers to use this event as an introduction to marathons. I'd like the race committee to make it as easy as possible for them to participate. One-day membership is allowed for local racing, it is not allowed in real "Championship" events. Race committee will have to weigh in with APBA to get a ruling on this issue.
A licensed driver MAY run Stock Classic on one day with one engine and the regular full-length marathon the next, but, the Stock Outboard National Championship Marathon is a 2-day event. This driver will have a great weekend of racing but would likely not be competitive in point totals for the Championship. More to follow. This is gonna' be FUN ! Mike Raceboat61-S

Thanks for the info Mike. I'd rather not screw up the system they already have in place and confuse people... I'll pick a class and stick with it both days.

Full year Classic Stock membership is the same reduced price as a J membership. If you have a Stock membership there is no cross-over fee to run classic Stock, since it is part of Stock Outboard. No high points are kept for Classic Stock, motors must have been out of production for at least 25 years and at one time been approved for Stock Outboard. So you can run your 25SS, 30H, 55H, 20H, KG4H, KG7H, 40H, KG9H, Evinrude Speeditwin, Johnson PO, Martin 200, and a Crescent Super C if you want to.
See rule 24, page 49 - 2008 APBA rule book.

          Darrell,

What specification would a speeditwin have to be in? I have a friend who runs the antique classes and would like to come up with us. Would it have to be a closed exhaust gas burner? Since there are no points, is the classic inspection, if there is such a thing, a little more open in the iterest of gaining participation?

          Thanks

          Steve Roskowski

I'm setting the goal of bringing 5 new guys with me in '08. I've already got the Duggan guys for two, George Simpson for three, my son Kyle for four, and a couple of others on the bubble. Maybe I'll get more than that!

            Steve,
I don't have a spec. sheet on the Speeditwin, but here is what the '53 rule book says:
Mufflers, expansion chambers or other exhaust system components must remain as furnished by the manufacturer. Cutouts must be kept closed. Exhaust relief holes may not be added or enlarged. Muffler covers and exhaust relief plates must be in place and properly secured as designed.
The straightaway record for CU in 1953 was 41.442 mph. Also the fuel must be gas/oil.

I have a 56-MN Champion Hot Rod, It has been out of production for more than 25 years, I don't understand why the early Hot Rods are not included?? Maybe an oversight??? Sorry if I am opening a can of worms.

                      8M,
Thanks for the correction that AXSR will run full marathon. Also, BRING ON the Champion Hot Rods!
To those that think that I should have piggy-backed on the Top'O thread let me say that I wanted a seperate thread from the original Top'O thread because: I was asked to see how much "new driver" support there was in the Stock Classic arena. This is a brand new deal. I'm really excited about the future, too. The race committee said that they would like to consider adding if we got a bunch of entries. I have already gotten a better early response than I expected and I think by forming our own thread we will continue to generate more enthusiasm and in turn, more entries. Race committee and others interested in the Top'O marathon are only 2 "clicks" away from reading either the Stock Classic thread or the race committee's thread here on HR. Thanks. Cancelled ! NO Stock Classics !

Sorry, Gents. Discussions with the host club were encouraging....numbers of Stock Classic racers that wanted to run was great, unfortunately a number of APBA rules and some local issues have caused the club to suspend any further efforts to add Stock Classics to the Top'O Michigan Marathon. Don Hagerl was very open, very honest, and very sorry but it will be impossible to economically add Stock Classic at Top'O in 2008.
                          1. Even though Stock Classic is a sub-category of the Stock Category, it's racing is considered a Special Event. Unfortunately, this means that a seperate sanction and an a huge insurance rider would be applied to the club's regular sanction fee. Essentially this would double the cost to the club. comment: seems unfair that SLT which is also a "special event" when added to the Stock Marathon does NOT incur the extra costs ?. Also, "J" committee too has special status so that any race director can add "J's" to their sanction and not incur additional sanction or insurance costs.
                          2. If Special Event was economically feasable for Top'O host club it would probably cause additional scrutiny from insurers for the entire event. comment: Nobody wants MORE regulation or more in-depth study of the safety of our sport, our equipment, and certainly not for our race sites. We've lost enough sites already.
                          3. I'm told that most townships in/around Indian River have noise rules. They are selectively enforced depending on public outcry at the time. comment: Harleys with open pipes in the middle of town and Cigarette-style go-fast boats on Burt Lake are apparently exempt? Top'O Mich race is controversial enough with some locals but antagonizing them is foolish. This is a great race with a greater history, I don't want to contribute to the loss of any race site, especially this one.
                          4. We as an organization need to look at the politics and reasoning behind our APBA rules that restrict clubs from adding Stock Classic to sanctions. I can do a Stock, Mod, Pro, "J" race and pay ONE sanction fee and run everything from little OMC's, to antiques, to 850cc hydro's and OSY....I can even add a marathon like Grass Lake does every Fall. BUT, I have to pay extra if I add Stock Classic to the mix.?? Somebody at APBA decided to stuff Stock Classics off into a corner where it is impossible for any club to be able to afford to run them. They negotiated an insurance deal without the best interests of the racers or the clubs at heart. Stock Classic needs a sponsor to get us "categorized" like SLT and "J". Or we need to be added to the Stock Category like the Pro's did with the C Service and C Race boats.
Okay, I'm done ranting. As a Race Director and as a club officer I appreciate the position the Top'O organizers are in. I'm just frustrated that without a spokesman at the APBA National level, Stock Classic is dead !

                            #1 is incorrect!
Stock Classic does not require a seperate sanction fee or additional insurnace.
Stock Classic is scheduled at the Oroville 100 marathon, there was no additional cost. Here is a link to the Oroville circular. http://www.apba-racing.com/apps/race...Sanctions.php?

I thought all along there would be a noise problem with the converted 20Hs.

I would encourage all the ones who wanted to run as Classics, grab a legal motor and run the full marathon, It is a blast!
