    Because..

The Tohatsu weighs more than the Merc by like 12 pounds (I'm sure the right number will be posted shortly) and drives a little differently (more torque). Adjust accordingly.

      Tohatsu DSH Boat Dimensions

      Randyrap,

The bottom needs to be several inches wider..... 38" - 39".

And an afterplane length of 86".

      Same sponsons.

My next question is this ...

What would be the difference between a DSH hull being built for a Merc compared to one being built for a Tohatsu? Would there even be a difference?

        Thanks ............ Randy

maybe add 1" to the bottom width and maybe 2-4" to the afterplane........

The Keylard DSH hull I have is 36'' wide with an afterplane of 82'' and 3.5'' lift. Remember, I'm 6'4'' 250 lbs.

Should I stay away from a Tohatsu with this hull?

            Tohatsu

[buy a Tohatsu.....you will be VERY HAPPY!!! And you CAN buy all the replacement parts new for it, if needed.........[/QUOTE]]

            Randyrap,

I agree with Daren... buy a Tohatsu. Your boat is a DSH... it's all about the testing. Test, test, test and then test some more!!!!!!!!!

The Bass/Tohatsu is a great motor and unit..... the gears will last a long time.

Regarding the Bass Tohatsu vs the Mercs. Since August 07, I've run a Bass/Tohatsu on a new O'Connor D boat. I like it. My old D rig got wrecked going into the 1st turn down at Thompson CT with help from my pal Shawn 7A, back in July. He's been on the receiving end of my rooster-tail since. Not so for Steve Noury 31A who's managed to wax me every time. From a performance angle, the two motors are darn close. The variables being, props, drivers, and boats. To me, the big plus for the Tohatsu comes from the maintainability standpoint. I love the Bass Machines tower, foot, and transom bracket which 'bolts' to the transom and is plenty adjustable. I like the way the engine starts and will virtually idle out of the pits - no fouled plugs or weak spark. Timing is simple to set and doesn't change. No tailcone bearings to grease. Propshaft is same dia as a Merc D, but has a 1/4" shearpin - nice! Waterpump impeller is same as Merc 500 fishing motor. I have just torn the powerhead completely down for inspection and to have the crankpins welded. This was a simple job. A 'harbor freight' flywheel puller, a simple set of metric tools and you're in there. Easier than a Merc. Cylinder head and covers separate easily. Gaskets are nice, few in number and cheap. Reassembly is a snap. Reed plate replacement is a snap. Carburetors are cleanable without the need for a carb gasket kit and the float setting is fixed. I still love Mercs - went to school for them in 59 and 61. But, I you want to get into the DSH mix without the headaches and anxiety of resurrecting tired iron, my advice is get a HAT... as in ToHATsu.
              Good luck - Alex

Just for curiousity sake... does this bolt on transom mean it stay's together most the time, like a tunnel hull would? Do you leave the mid housing on the transom and put the powerhead and foot away somewhere for trailering? Or would you recommmend an enclosed trailer and just leave it all together?

                  Andrew,
Last year I just unbolted it from the transom and bolted it to the normal board in the trailer the other motors hung on. This season, I will probably pull the two large 1" dia bolts and leave the brackets on the transom. Then make a bracket which bolts to the trailer board and use the two 1" bolts to secure the engine to that. It takes a bit of getting used to but I really like having the engine bolted securely to the boat.

Alex; do u run the Boisen reeds, or the stock steel ones?
How often do they need replacing
When u welded thecrank, had it gone off some??

Brian, I don't know what Steve weighs in at but when he crosses that start line flat out as the clock strikes 12, ya better bring yer lunch.
My crank grew about 22thou. The reeds were spitting a fair amount of fuel inside the cowl at the end. I'm getting the crank welded next week. I intend to run a new set of stock reeds this season and change them out half way thru if need be. I want to get some time with this engine before changing stuff. I don't think this is a fickle motor. I blew the boat over prior to the first race testing and the tach went to 8840 with no ill effects. I'll chase the bores with a ball hone put in a new set of rings.

                              Fyi.......

                              BH66

Actually the weight has gone south by 20#'s for several reasons:

At the CBF Banquet they ran out of food by the time Table 27 was called. (Out of 27 Tables!)

At the South Shore Banquet we were the MC, no time to eat!

The anxiety of a 20 hour round trip to the TORC Banquet will burn off any calories consumed.

New Hampshire has had record snowfall for December so we have had way too much physical activity cleaning out our complex!

The positive outcome is that we are now right on the money for the revived

BSR Canadian Classic class with the 20H. Probably too light for DSH, we'll see.

Now, continue this thread, it has been interesting.......
