    All three should be mandatory:

    1- Reinforced cockpit sides
2- Round tips for both hydro and runanouts
3- Nothing less then two or three layer kevlars ** If you are wearing one layer you might as well not be wearing any at all.

Go ahead and scream about the cost and call me crazy

When we pick up our CSR it will probably get changed to round or duckbill.
How ironic that just like everything else in SO here we are years later and its still being debated does anything ever get done in SO ? or has it just been 60 years of debates and still the same old thing.

Here is what happined in Nor Cal 400. It was at the Chowchilla race, the three drivers in the race worked for the same company & their boss paid their entry. The three received pre race instruction. All went well in their first heat, the driver of the white boat finished last.
In the second heat the driver of the white boat was on the outside at the starting line, turned left, into the side of the green boat. The left sponson of the white boat went through the right cockpit side of the green boat and into the left cockpit side. The driver of the white boat said that he thought the starting line bouy was the turn. The driver of the green boat was injured in the rear of one leg and required many stitches.
The sponson tips of the white boat were rounded some (about a 3/4 to 1" dia.) The tip went throught then the edge of the sponson sliced through the cockpit side. There was no damage to the sponson until where it hit the transom of the green boat.
The green boat had 6mm cockpit sides with a layer of kevlar on the inside. The kevlar may have helped, but didn't prevent the sponson going though it.
The sponson ripped througn the kevlar pants the green boat's driver was wearing, causing the injury to his leg.
The kevlar pants were my own pair (Lifeline) that I purchased in 2000. I have given them to Bob Wartinger for testing. I borrowed Secutity kevlar to finish out the season and just ordered new Security kevlar from Pat.
My next post is of rounding the sponson tips of the third (brown) Nor Cal boat this morning.

          EZ Pickle round off

Tools: Saw, small grinder with sanding disk. (if you don't have a grinder a rasp will also work.

          1. Make a small mark where the pickle fork tip is 2" wide. Then go foward 1" and mark the saw cut line.

          2. Cut off the tips with a saw.

          3. Round with the sanding disk or rasp. (my time so far was 9 minutes)

          4. Finish sand and paint with a camouflage blue-gray color so you can get that "perfect" start at the nationals without the camera catching you.

I'm currently recovering from a side impact accident (approx. 95mph). My boat meets all UIM requirements for side impact, and the other boat met UIM requirements for rounded pickles. I was also wearing a 2007 cutsuit from SRP. I suffered extensive lower back injuries, internal injuries,a broken left arm and tissue damage on my back-side that still requires two visits a day from home care nurses. The bottom-line.......you can't prevent accidents, but you can protect yourself with all the latest technology. If this accident would have occurred several years ago, It would have been much worse.

                  James,

First and foremost its good to hear you made it out of the wreckage without life threating injuries and that you are on the road to recovery. Second it would appear that the combination of all the latest technology help reduce the risk of life altering serious injury.

                      Thanks Kristi

On a serious note I lost one of my best friends a few year back to Stock Outboard Racing racing and just dont want to see it happen to anyone else if it can be prevented.
