Did I miss something or did the rounded pickle fork mandate get tossed out the window? Every time I click on the 2008 new boat thread I see all the new boats both runabouts and hydro’s with the deadly sharp tips.

I believe . . .
The MORC was the only commission to act on this issue and pass a rule for all new construction starting this fall (read your Dec 07 Propeller issue, Modified article pg 20, for exact wording and dates). This was done at the National Meeting in 07.
The previous Stock Chair had the Stock Rules Committee look at the Mod rule for potential presentation to the SORC. The rules committee recommended that the rule be presented as written. The previous Stock Chair was looking for a uniform rule between all the outboard categories so that the rule would be standard across the categories before presentation to the SORC.
I have no idea what "exactly" happened over the summer but am lead to believe that the category chairs discussed the issue during the season and that some action would take place in Detroit, bringing a uniform "pickle rule" to all outboard categories.
I guess we will see/read what happens in January.Brian 10s

Rounded pickle are on some boats
I've been doing the rounded tips for a while. Here are a couple of photos of the latest 25MH for Gerry Muncy.
I plan to do a little testing before the national meeting to show the effects of various sponson tips vs. various cockpit constructions to hopefully shed some light on this rather than base things on hearsay and random thoughts.
I'll post results when I have them.

Here is what happened in mod
I just got my Dec. Propeller. Page 20
"All MO hydroplane hulls built after Octomer 31, 2007 will have the foremost points of the sponson pickleforks that meet the following requirements for shape. The foremost points of the pickleforks shall have a minimum radius of 1" in one view. This minimum radius shall extend at least 45 degrees to both sides of the foremost point. At 90 degrees to this radius conforming view, the foremost point on the picklefork will have a minimum thickness of 3/4". This minimum thickness shall extrend at least 45 degrees on both sides of the foremost point."

The whole Mod rule
As posted on APBA website and in the Propeller
Modified Hydroplane Pickleforks and Cockpit Noses
Effective November 1, 2007, all MO hydroplane hulls shall have a construction date permanently affixed to the inside of the transom in a location easily visible to the inspector. (If the actual construction date of a hull is unknown, a one-time declaration of a construction date (month and year) may be permanently affixed by the owner or driver to the inside of the transom.)
All MO hydroplane hulls built after October 31, 2007 will have the foremost points of sponson pickleforks that meet the following requirements for shape. The foremost points of the pickleforks shall have a minimum radius of 1” in one view. This minimum radius shall extend at least 45 degrees to both sides of the foremost point. At 90 degrees to this radius conforming view, the foremost points on the picklefork will have a minimum thickness of 3⁄4”. This minimum thickness shall extend at least 45 degrees to both sides of the foremost point.
All MO hydroplane hulls built after October 31, 2007, where the cockpit nose extends forward of the body of the hull, shall have a cockpit nose that conforms to the same requirements for shape as the picklefork foremost points described in paragraph 2 above.
Half-oval aluminum rub molding may be used around the foremost points of pickleforks and cockpit noses provided the molding is at least 1⁄2” in width.
This rule does not apply to hulls that conform to runabout specifications, conventional round-nose hydroplane hulls without pickleforks or sponson noses that extend forward of the body of the hull, or tunnel hulls that conform to OPC specifications for collapsible sponson noses.Brian 10s

Fillet color
Dave,
That is just the phenolic microballoon filler. All the epoxy manufacurers ( or should I say re-sellers) sell it. It is a lightweight, but low strength filler. I've been putting the fillets like this on inside corners for a while now. When it gets painted, it looks like the whole thing was molded as one piece. It is actually a little more of a maroonish tint than it looks in the photos.

I started doing mine like this on the last boats I built and the new AXSH is like this the angle is around 30 degrees and the tip is balsa and the air trap end is blunt.Attached FilesDestiny is a matter of chance,it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

Okay, I can see the future. The APBA will have to contract out for sets of go/nogo templates and issue same to all inspectors so they can radius check all hydro sponsontips. heh heh . . .carpetbagger
