come down to winter nats with us dude... daren, guedo & i are willing to make the trip if we can get a few other D's to show. don't know about your weather but 80 and sunshine sounds pretty good to me.
i've come to the conclusion that we just need to get in the kool-aid line and enjoy the party while it lasts. don't get all twisted up over the helmet thing. in a couple years it's looking like all classes faster than C will be racing NBRA anyhow. a duct-tape visor to a metal flake stars and stripes captain america open face is okay with them. sure am glad i bought a good shoei a couple years ago. 400 bucks not expected would be a tough one this year.
NBRA has a little stricter rules on helmets than that. Right out of the rule book. Helmets must be a competition racing grade and type with a Snell rating of 95 or better or must meet DOT 2000 standards and be in working order without any cracks, defective straps, buckles ,loose padding, broken face plates, and shields. Bottom line DOT or Snell are approved.

I like the NBRA wording. Seems adequate to me. I also like the fact that the NBRA rulebook came with my membership. It's not very thick. And, even tho it's not on-line... more importantly, it is ON MY BENCH.
Now.... I read this as if the helmet only says Department of Transportation (DOT) then it is not an acceptable helmet. If, however it reads DOT & ANSI and/or has a Snell Rating (within the acceptable years) then it is an approved helmet
Welcome to hydroracer, we hope you enjoy your visit.

i was just trying to make light of some changes that come at a really untimely period in our sport. just look in the last 2 weeks. the second best DSH in the country along with another pretty darn good DSH outfit in region 10 is for sale. appears both of these teams are getting out of D not upgrading to the newer better motor. i've taken off the rose colored glasses.
increase in membership dues, entry fees, additional costs by hosting clubs at the race sites and now tell the guy who just bought his kid a new helmet he can't use it next year. we are doing all the right things. wait until we have to send our cutsuits and life jackets for a bi-yearly re-cert. watch the mass exodus then.
this is just my opinion.

well, looks like I'm screwed!! any body out there with a son named John who wants to buy a freshly gold leafed bell helmet that he can use in soap box derby!!
Just looking at that paint job it would seem that by filling it in a little it would resemble a hand with the 'finger-of-fate' extended. I'm kinda liking that helmet. Maybe I could bogart some Snell or Ansi decals and wear it when I go sno-mobiling up at the Forks. The guys'd really get a kick out of it.. they're all a bunch of outlaws up there. How much yu want for that hummer?
OK folks. I do not have the money to buy a new helmet. That means that I will not race this year. Even though my helmet has a snell 2005 tag, it is open faced. I hope if comes to it the APBA will return my membership money. This is not the case of a straw that broke the camels back. It is a case of the straw that broke an already overloaded camels back. I have made big race plans for this year. It is really sad that It all these changes has to be put on us at one time. I have followed the APBA for years. I was raised on between 8 mile and 9 mile. That was back when it was called East Detroit. The 40's and 50's. This was going to be my dream year of racing. It is the last thing on my bucket list. Well good luck in you future endeavors. I just can't afford the APBA.
Since we're taking a year off to pay on a college tuition loan we didn't receive a letter from APBA either
I received my APBA card last week after a long time off. I got a card that you cant read unless i hold it the right way in the light and 2 stickers folded in half in a tiny envelope. I didnt get anykind of paper work...lol

Tim Weber from Atlanta offered to GIVE APBA legal size envelopes to mail out APBA Cards and Stickers so as not to damage the oversized stickers. Nothing like getting a card you can't read and folded up stickers in a letter size envelope that are damaged for $220!!........maybe the new procedure for 2012-13 from Crown Partners will include new sized to fit envelopes?? We can omly hope.
Also - I also love that they have excluded Offshore and H1 from these rules. Why?? Are those categories less dangerous?
Funny thing..........it was the H1 Division actions that lead to the loss of our insurance carrier for 2012. Offshore and H1 are the reason a lot of these cost increases are in effect for APBA. Hummmmmmm, seems these members represent a small fraction of the total APBA Membership! What's wrong with that picture!! Just sayin!

Matt, I am not mad or complaining honestly... I am happy as all hell to be back in racing. Dont know how many I will be at other then reg 1 races.
You said it about as well as it can be said. One by one racer by racer APBA is figuring out way's to reduce membership. For some it might be the helmet issue that "Broke the camels back". For others it might just be the extra $25in membership fees. For others it might be the wasted cost to re-certify a perfectly good life jacket. Or a combination of many things. My team did not race at all last year for a variety of reasons and may not this year. Right now to get my three boats and drivers legal would cost over $2,000. All the boats need new six point harnesses (When the 5 point harnesses are all like brand new). That's two day's work and about $800. Then both jackets that have been worn less than a dozen times in three years need re-certification. Then we need a seat in two boats - when none used to be required. Now we need to repaint custom painted helmets and remove sponsor graphics on them. Fortunately I can afford to pay the price if I had to where many other just can not. Just not sure I have the stamina to keep doing this stupid dance every year!
