      • Oak Harbor, Washington

Here are 2 sequence photos taken in the late '70's at a Whidbey Roostertails race at Oak Harbor, Washington in the salt water! 6 boats started, only 2 came out of the first turn. Wish I had a picture of that first turn. It was wild!
Notice, there are no boat carts and no cutdown cockpit sides. The Yamato 80 had just came out.
I would like to see if any of these boats or drivers could be identified. I know that the blue/white/yellow picklefork was driven by a guy named Mumford. I don't know about the 2*US, but would like to know more. Looks like a Craig Craft or Demaray. There are some new Karelsen pickleforks too if you look close. These were the first picklefork outboard hydros I can remember seeing.

        • Winternationals 1970

+Jimmy Dawe met up with some land swindlers and they wanted to put on a race. They were selling lots a Golden Shores, Arizona...about five miles from the river...

I suggested the name Winternationals. (They had like $50,000 to put on a boat race). So, when my brother, Russ Hill Jr. went to the APBA National Comvention and said we were having a Winternationals...everyone except the Californians went nuts.

They said we were making the NATIONALS a cheaper event...My brother explained that Clyde Winter and Fred Nationals didn't care about the Natioanls the just wanted a boat race named after them....

The Winternationals paid $45,000 in 20 DOLLAR BILLS and gave a way two $6,500 lots. I won one lot and Clark Maloof won the other...I later sold my lot for $12,000....

This is F Hydro.....19-C was the winner!

Johnson PO15 used either in CU (Evinrudes were better as they had a smaller gear case) Or as used in CM class.
