This was on the back of a CU at the 55 Winnebagoland race.
Merc 30Hs were out the following year.

      • Hey Coop,

Are there any shots of my Grandpa in the old marathon stuff?
Back then he would have had D-10-W on his boat.

          Tim,
I don't think so. Lots of shots. These are from 56 when it was really rough.

            John,
Rich and Chucky Z going at in "A". I do not remember the finals of ASR that year which is strange for me. I was defending champ but ran a borrowed boat as my new one wasn't done yet. The following spring at the Dayton Record Runs I won ASR with my new boat. That boat is sitting in my shop right now waiting to be spruced up. It won the 1978 15SSR Championships in NY.

            • Coop,

The super rough year you are reffering about has a story from granps.

He was crossing Butte Demortes and the waves were so large that he was scraping the lower unit in the lake mud when he bottomed in the trough of the waves. He said when he got back in, the lower unit skeg was polished from the mud.

He was one of the only finishers in DU that year.

Notice, there are no boat carts and no cutdown cockpit sides. The Yamato 80 had just came out.
I would like to see if any of these boats or drivers could be identified. I know that the blue/white/yellow picklefork was driven by a guy named Mumford. I don't know about the 2*US, but would like to know more. Looks like a Craig Craft or Demaray. There are some new Karelsen pickleforks too if you look close. These were the first picklefork outboard hydros I can remember seeing.

                  Bill,

The white/Blue/Yellow picklefork that Rick Mumford had was built by Bryan "B.A." Anderson, and painted in my parent's basement in 1975. It looked very much like a Craig Craft, and its design was a collaboration between BA and Mark and Dan Kirchner. Bryan ran it once in ASH and decided he didn't like it and sold it to Mumford. Kirchner's boat ran well in ASH but they did blow it over at Albany when they tried a 25SS on it (D'OH!). Theirs was white with orange and black stripes, like the Pay n Pak. They took it to Dayton that year and sold it to someone in Iowa who I believe cranked out a couple of copies of it. They were pretty decent boats and looked very cool.

The 2-US with the black deck and the Yamato 80 on it was Cheyney Street's first 20SSH boiat. I think he bought it from Mumfords too (I'm sure Cheyney will correct me if I'm wrong here ) but it was actually built by Darrell Sorensen for Jim McDonald who ran it in ASH. That was probably the best early hydro that Darrell built, and much its design was influenced by Joe Price. Looking back on it now, that's a total trip that they ran a Yamato on it, because it was a small boat!

There are two boats that "disappeared into the ether" up at Whidbey that I would love to get my hands on: One was the BA/Kirchner boat in your pic; the other was the "Craig Craft Squatty Body" which was the ONLY picklefork (ASH) that Craig built in 1974. Mumford ended up with that one too. It ran well, but Craig sold it because he felt that since the bottom was 34" wide, it was too wide for ASH (another D'OH!) No idea where either of these boats ended up.

                        Fond du Lac lighthouse.
The race started in FDL instead of Neenah from 1955 to 1961
Those shots are of the start.
Only 22 finished in all classes that year, only 3 "Bs" finished that year.

Yep. Except the sign painter made a mistake and painted it as R-4.

The boats in Tomtall's pics that have the Y80's on them look itty bitty compared to what everybody is running today. Whoa.
