The Newberg Memorial Day race has been held since about 1949. It started as a marathon from Albany OR to Newberg OR (i'm sure it was a take off of the Albany-NY race) After the first year or two it was just a closed course race on Memorial Day May 30th. In 1972 after a few low turnouts due to it being a one day race, it was decided to move the race to the weekend near Memorial Day (soon after that the holiday moved to the last Monday in May) It became a 2 day race with a pit party on Saturday night. Then one year someone decided to burn on old discarded race boat on the bonfire. That has become a tridition since then. A couple of the more memorial partys was the year there was a full eclipse of the moon, and the year streeking was "in".
Our memorial day weekend will include both Newberg where I will race CSR. Then on the way back attend the annual Grants Pass Boatnik. Won't be racing but hope to snag a ride in the sweep boat.
We will be taking a old DeSilva copy alky runabout that I bought for the Alum. Keller steering wheel (after removing the wheel, couldn't give it away) for the bonfire. My wife, Linda thought that it was a great idea to take the boat to Newberg and get it out of our yard!
