  • Newberg Oregon this weekend

The Newberg Memorial Day race has been held since about 1949. It started as a marathon from Albany OR to Newberg OR (i'm sure it was a take off of the Albany-NY race) After the first year or two it was just a closed course race on Memorial Day May 30th. In 1972 after a few low turnouts due to it being a one day race, it was decided to move the race to the weekend near Memorial Day (soon after that the holiday moved to the last Monday in May) It became a 2 day race with a pit party on Saturday night. Then one year someone decided to burn on old discarded race boat on the bonfire. That has become a tridition since then. A couple of the more memorial partys was the year there was a full eclipse of the moon, and the year streeking was "in".
Our memorial day weekend will include both Newberg where I will race CSR. Then on the way back attend the annual Grants Pass Boatnik. Won't be racing but hope to snag a ride in the sweep boat.
We will be taking a old DeSilva copy alky runabout that I bought for the Alum. Keller steering wheel (after removing the wheel, couldn't give it away) for the bonfire. My wife, Linda thought that it was a great idea to take the boat to Newberg and get it out of our yard!

        Newberg

Me and the wife got the CORA club trailer and the team trailer loaded tonight. Ken Kaiser has been working his tail off. The Newberg Boat Club has their end well in hand. We'll all be there Friday setting up - will the new CORA clock be ready? 59th annual regatta, and yes it is either the longest or second longest consecutive running APBA event. It's the only river race in Region 10. There are folks who skip it because they don't like the river, or the tight turns, or the steep ramp. But it's historic. Listening to the Darrell Sorensen's, Dan Schwartz's, Buzz Thorsen's, Carl Lewis's, Pat Gleason's and others tell Newberg stories is one of the highlights of the weekend. It's also a chance to race with our friends from California who make the trek north, and a few OPC boats who come and jack the crowd up with high speed passes. Yes - the crowd; it's the biggest crowd we see at a Region 10 race. Dang, it's going to be hard to concentrate at work tomorrow.
