This could happen in 2010 as the Last Friday in July is the 30th. So we in Region 11 will need to schedule the Stock/Mod nationals the following week in August of 2010 in Oroville. This will allow those that attend the Pro Nationals travel time to Oroville.

      plan ahead

Thank you for pointing that out Bill. We have time to take this into account before next weeks meeting. Depue to Cali in just 4 days dosn't sound like fun, but the only other options would be the middle of July or end of August.

We will need to discuss this. It is an easy 3 day trip if you do not stop in Reno or Tahoe. Looks like we will need to give some drivers a break and let them do a late registration and long as they send their entries in before hand. We need to treat boat racers as customers. That has been my motto for a very long time.

Jeff and others, I am sick and tired of hearing every year that OSY 400 is the largest class in the world. It may be, But what you guy's run here in the states is nothing more than a CSH with no weight restrictions. OSY stands for Outboard Stock Yamato. I do not see anything that said that it was a Pro class in the UIM book. It is a stock class. Remember it is called OSY. Again that stands for Outboard Stock Yamato. Get It? A true OSY 400 rig starts from the beach and the engine is more stock than are stock catagory runs it. Like they cannot even shape the gear foot. They are ran the way that Yamato sent them to the dealers STOCK! So stop complaining about not being able to run at the PRO nationals and take it to the Stock nationals where it belongs.

It is what it is. So just make the best of it and hope for better scheduling next year.

Ok fire away I am off the soap box now.

              Sad

The first year (I think don't quote me on that) that a cross category achievement is being recognized in the Hall of Champions, and this is how we react.

I truly hope those OSY drivers who were going to try and make DePue, don't. You are correct, they belong in Grass Lake, and I can imagine the CSH elims and finals will be awesome as usual.

You have more than one stock class in the pro category, and a lot more cross category drivers outside of the OSY class than you realize. It is too bad we couldn't just call it miscommunication and try to make the best of it, as we always do, instead of throwing stones.

                comprimise

Witht he schedules the way they are and you have already said the dates cannot be changed is there a chance to PO everyone a little more?

If the Stocks are starting early in the week, is it possible to run elims for 20/CS /AX/J(?) classe we are talking about before Friday so that they could come to Depue?
I know that there are other overlaps, but that seems to be the classes that we are really talking about.

Is there a chance to run the OSY-400 class later in the weekend at Depue? just some thoughts?

                  Wondering

Has anyone asked either sponsor if they can change the dates? It seems to me it will benefit both if one or the other makes the change.

                    Decisions, Decisions

Pick a primary class to run each year, support it, nurture new members of that class, attend the nationals of your class choice, be a good sport, and quit trying to operate multiple classes that screw up race schedules for everyone else who wants to race and have fun while they try to compete in boat racing. This schedule conflicts issue for probably 5% (or less) of the total APBA racing population is why the UIM restricts World Cup events to smaller groups of classes per event so the other 95% and their families can enjoy the sport (I have heard that they sometimes do have schedule conflicts between the regular O-250 and O-350 circuit events because of cross-overs.)

You did not see any OSY-400 or O-350 boat classes being raced at the APBA/UIM-sponsored Florida World's Cup Race for several good reasons (this event venue was probably decided long ago at UIM and agreed upon by the APBA.) The UIM longer heat venues and jetty starts are not perfect, but the added time between heats in their World's Cup schedules gives the class participants reasonable time to check spark plugs, refuel, check motor performance stats, change props, and maybe even temporarily patch that long jagged crack that shows up in the bottom of your new GrEp composite hull (Is this not correct, my racing friend Alex?).

I don't know of any other international or U.S. motorsport that has conflicts like these stock outboard cross-over issues (SCCA, karts, drag racing, motocross, sportbike, etc.) There has always been some conflict between the two APBA national championship boat racing schedules since I started racing in 1993 (always a challenge to prepare, reasonably travel, and participate in both events.) This problem starts with trying to schedule too many local club events right up to the nationals, and then is further complicated by families and individuals trying to run too many classes with the same gear and drivers. All of this boat racing effort and money expense usually occurs with no team sponsorship support for the cross-over classes at issue, and VERY minimal events sponsorship money at many local sanctions (that draw very few spectators and encourages cross-overs to "make money" for the non-profit club) before the two nationals.

The pressure of trying to race everything on one weekend and achieving multiple titles at the expense of other racers and their families spoils the fun and anticipation to compete for a national title. Isn't it enough to get the opportunity to win one great national title and not have to be "seeded" or a national top points contender (especially to be able to have the opportunity to qualify for the final class national championship heat 90% of the time if your equipment runs well)? There is no reason to be GREEDY at others' expense, is there?

As a side note - the sad thing for our Pro classes is there currently are no USTS-sponsored Pro races on the West Coast...

There - I got off my soap box again. I will put on my raincoat now to protect me from the stream of over-ripe tomatoes soon to be tossed at me in this thread (mostly from racers in Region 10 - LOL.)

I love going to Depue as much as possible. I'm not the lightest guy (last year i was exactly 440lbs in my OSY/CSH boat), but i love going to depue and racing in front of the crowds. I love going to Depue to watch racing i can't watch in WA every weekend (i.e. 1100H, 350R, etc). I love watching my best buddy win 350H! It's a great exprience! I tell people who havn't gone to go, because it's one of my favorite races to go to...the coment above is starting to make me wonder if i even should go in the future! Don't be a D***! this is the kind of crap that turns people off outboard racing! BTW when OSY drivers can't make the pro's. you're loseing $$$$$$, which in my opinion is going to be hard to come by this next season.

If no schedule changes are made, that's life, I will try and make Sunday Depue to watch Top Hydro, etc...

About the conflict of dates - my oldest Granddaughter was born on the last Friday (the 31st) in July. I was in Depue as the Nationals were July 31, Aug 1-2. This year on July 31 she will be in Depue with me when she celebrates her 22nd birthday.

Nice that she will be with you! I was in Olympia, pulling weeds out of the lake so we could race, on my 10th Anniversary. I'm sure I will hear about it oh.....forever!

Facts for 2008 (according to APBA website)

Entire Pro Category - 328 registered totalling 1225 entries
                            OSY - 71 registered totalling 325 entries

Pro category after Removing OSY: 257 registered totalling 900 entries.

CSH alone - 125 registered totalling 835 entries.

If it stays as is, I will be at Grass Lake with Colin (only an hour and a half from my kids and grandkids) and Susan will be at Depue with Ashley. Sheryl will have to choose which kid to watch! I hate to miss the Pro Nationals and the great show the USTS puts on, but there was a mix-up and we are trying to deal with it the best we can. I'm sure it will be brought up in Raleigh and I will refrain from commenting on this topic any further.
