  • Timing for Y102

The owners manual I got from Ric Montoya says the Y102 timing can be set from .200 to .250. Bob G. said to set the timing after replacing the #2 cylinder points (he advises to replace and set the adjustment on the #1 cyclinder points first). I usually set the timing as close to .250 BTDC as I can get it, but have used .235 also. I have two standard-bore, Y102 motors with R8102A-10 NGK plugs (one mod, one "stock").

Any thoughts out there on alternate settings for the Yamato 102 timing?

This is what I have learned from Bob Gollor and TJ. Cap # 1 points at .014. Then using a dial indicator and buzzer on #1 cyl set timing at .235. Lock the mag plate down. You will need to adjust as locking down the plate will move the timing somewhat. Then move the dial indicator to #2 and then adjust #2 point cap for .235 or close as you can get it. Check #2 point and it should be .014. If you are coming to Oroville I will OJT you. Some set the timing as low as .200 and some as high as .265. Also it helps to have 2 dial indicators.
