  • 2 cycle oil for Yamato's

I know I will get 100 different answears to this but here goes.

What kind of 2 cycle oil do you Yamato guys use???? Ratio???? I have been using Mercury synthetic blend at 32:1. Is this two rich or lean?

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark,

I use Klotz synthetic outboard oil in all of my engines and mix it according to maufactorer's specs, which is 4.5 ounces per gallon. Never had a problem. If you over mix synthetic, look for over lubrication and glazing of the cylinder walls, which will cause the piston rings to not seal properly, loosing horsepower. Synthetic oil is very touchy with this.

Joe the stuff I am currently using (Mercury synthetic blend) is not 100% synthetic. It is a multi ratio oil It can be mixed 100:1, 50:1 etc. Per manufactures label.

Thanks for the heads up on mixing synthetics though.

Mark, I have ran that Merc oil in my motors (including that one you got from me) before with no problems whatsoever, so you are fine. I ran it at 32:1. I now run synthetic Amsoil at 40:1

yep, I am. Looking for a place with a shop right now. I am missing this weekends racing in Yelm though, but will be back on track for the race in Newberg, Ore in 2wks. I might even make it to the race next weekend, but Sunday only. Best thing about my move, is that I can finally go testing now and have a place to test 10minutes away!

It's nice to have a place close to home to test. I only have to drive 20min. to a test site where I can be all alone for the day. No other boaters in site. Just don't try it during the Duck hunting season. Right Steve J.

ya, it is gonna be nice (to be able to test), since I have only gotten to "test" twice in the last 6yrs. Maybe now I will not be running at the back of the pack!!! I am gonna go testing tommorrow (hopefully).

bel ray is great oil. Redline 2stroke sythetic is excellent, 5% power gain and the best protection I think...I overheated my 30h on the redline oil.... whooo! good think I didn't have any of that tcwIII junk in there...but the redline is good for the high revving engines, since they take their competitors oil and run high rpm 125cc race carts compared to theirs, and then dissasemble the engines and measure clearences, don't see too many doing that and their shockproof heavy duty gear oil works wonders in lower units

I do not think you know what you are talking about, when you state "good think I didn't have any of that tcwIII junk in there"..............you might want to check the labels on your 2cycle oils....................TCWIII is a rating, not a brand of oil. Also, just about every 2cycle oil manufacturer goes through the same testing as you stated only Redline does. None of the oils mentioned here is rated the best though...check for yourself! None of the current 2cycle oils that are TCWIII (TCWII either) certified are going to damage your engines either, the owner of the motor is whom causes the damage by neglect or stupidity or plain lack of common sense!

You are close but not exactly right. TCW-lll is not a rating for oil that gives some sort of rating or ranking but it is a certicication so that any oilw which passes is a pretty decent oil. If you want some more info on it, click here and then see the pdf file on TCW-lll oil-http://www.nmma.org/certification/programs/oils/.

You'll see that they use a 15 HP Merc motor so they have some area of interest for a J owner as these guys generate a lot of used parts if you can find them.

What is not obvious is that the tests for lubricity are conducted at only 1/3 of the oil ration being certified. If the engine oil is certified at 100:1, this test is performed on a new powerhead at 300:1, so any oil passing has great lubricity when run at our lower ratios.

You'll see that power output is a minor concern and only to show that power doesn't decrease too much over time. Since us racers are generally more interested in power and lubricity than ash and ring sticking, we might not always choose an TCW-lll oil. However a TCW-lll oil will provide good lubrication

you know what I meant or said what I meant. Plus, we do not run our motors as long or slow enough to allow them to carbon up, so I just wanted to point out that TCWIII is not bad as Shawn stated.

BTW: thanks Sam for the link to the TCWIII info!

                            Shawn,

How do you know that Red Line increases power 5% ? Do you have a dyno?

Per Jerry Weinandt, oil is cheaper than parts. I have run as rich as 12:1 and as lean as 32:1 with non synthetics and frankly, I have not noticed a difference. So, I run on the rich side.

I have run OMC, Mercury, Pennzoil, and Chevron. I haven't noticed a lot of difference.

Tim, ya gott be going faster than 40MPH to notice!!! Just kiddin' buddy. What you have said is pretty much what I was saying. Synthetics will give you an edge, but not sure about 5%!

hey Tony, is that speed you picked up in OSY due to using Redline oil?????
