Tachometer for Merc KG9-1

What tach will work on the old KG9-1 with the Fairbanks-Morse magneto? Tiny Tach says theirs will not work due to "dirty electronic environment" caused by the mag.
Has anyone ever tried a speedometer hooked to one of the thru hull paddle wheel pickups such as made by AIRMAR for tournament ski boats?

Paddle wheel speedo

I used a paddle wheel speedo mounted on the back of the hull for a data acquisition set up on my 25ssh, worked perfectly with minimal drag worked good even in race conditions.
