I heard the Tohatsu in DMOD had 2 yes votes only and they were not from the West Coast, other than that I know who 1 was but not the other....

DMR weight I heard was not even discussed at any length.

      Tohatsu in D-Mod

I run both a Tohatsu and a Merc 44mod on both the hydro and runabout in NBRA. With the no height and no prop restriction in NBRA the Tohatsu is not even close to the 44 Merc. The Merc has way more acceleration and top end than the Tohatsu. I know that in APBA you can run a Mod Merc 40 in D-Mod along with the 44. I doubt that any of the front runners are running a 40. A top 40 Merc will run about the same as a Tohatsu and will get beat 10 times out of 10 by a 44. If you need to allow the motor in D Mod to help fill the class I would think the 44 Merc drivers should have nothing to worry about.

        D mod

As far as I am concerned it is a dead subject to bring the Tohatsu into the class....I spent ZERO time worrying about it at the national meeting. One interesting thing happened though...one of the mod commisioners came up to me and stated that he hated the fact that I sold my 44XS....and hated even more that I bought a new Tohatsu....and he continued to state that every time I saw him in Chicago....I was like...huh...

          Tohatsu

Thats no surprise, I was at the winternationals in Louisiana and most of the Mercury 44XS drivers would not run because of the Tohatsu being there.

            Winternationals

Well..you bring up a very sore subject there....the Tohatsu never even left the trailer...a bunch of us drove and flew a long ways to run the class, and at drivers meeting everybody but myself and one other person scratched. I had to be physically restrained from going up to our 44XS friend in Canada and punching his lights out...true story. But, that being said...things have been patched up at least in the stock class, and the people I was pissed at are now good friends again. David

Fortunately I started racing when motors ...........

were not a problem, and manufacturers were plentiful and realized benefits from racing. As boating grew by leaps and bounds, so did the motors in size, leading to larger classes and more participants in those classes. (OPC) Larger motors, more profit for the manufacturers. Simple. For those that bemoan the loss of smaller displacement motors, it was a natural progression because of the profit motive, and giving the folks what they wanted.

Now, to the point, and nothing personal, BUT, the last two posts are prime examples why smaller manufacturers like the Brothers on the west coast making the tower housings, lower units, ect., for the benefit of racers that still do want to compete in the classes from 50CI and down, are really tearing their hair out right now wondering whether it is worth it to spend all the time, money, effort in getting their product approved by the various commissions, the EPA, and then have folks sit on the bank because they don't like the brand name on a cowling.

It is competition guys, and diversity in motor availability makes it more fun, and keeps the sport more affordable for all. In addition it gives the newbie a way to get into the sport reasonably without having to purchase someone elses hand me down equipment, which is probably not going to be competitive, especially with a new driver. Who sells their best stuff??

Realizing this is primarily a stock and mod discussion, it still would not hurt everyone involved to look at the PRO category as a good way to run a program. A variety of motors has always been available, and competition keeps the prices reasonable comparatively. The availability of the PRO engines has also kept the mod category in APBA and others supplied with lower units for the last 20+ years also.

Smart folks copy whatever seems to work, no matter the name on the cowling or category. As someone else noted, it is not always necessary to reinvent the wheel.

One more thing to think about. What if the Japanese parliment woke up one morning and decided to prohibit gambling? If you think that is a long shot, stranger things have happened.
