Thanks for all the input. I wound up with a total thickness of .086 (.026 is shims). I used Steve's method to test lash, e.t.c. and everything feels good. I sealed the halves with the Permatex.
We will give it a shot at Lock Haven and see if it holds up.
Another quick question....Does the Merc J have more bottom end power than an OMC? We have a J hydro that refuses to plane as a J no matter what OMC or prop we try. Maybe the Merc will make it happen.
