  • KE/KF/KG Mercury throttle hook up

    Hello,

I am hooking a deadmans throttle to a KE-7 Mercury, and I need some pictures or incite into how to make the cable connections at the carb throttle linkage. I have seen several "kits" to hold the cable and attach to the throttle, but they don't seem to match the carb on the KE-7 due to clearance issues etc.. Any help would be appreaciated.

I'm pretty sure East Coast marine offered one at one time.
I have one of the kits on a KE4

Is this going on a standard fishing lower unit? If so Mercury made a adapter that the throttle cable hooked to the steering arm on the engine and then the adapter went from there to the carb. I have one dof these laying around, I will look and see if I can locate it and send a picture. It also permits the lower cowl to be used.......Bob N-96

I talked to Charlie Fry on this one and he suggested that you must find the kit that enables you to move the linkage from the top of the carborator to the bottom. If you are using the mount on the tiller handle. He also says there is another kit that comes with a link shaped like a "z" if you must use the top of the carb but they where unreliable and would stick sometimes. I'll ask him if he has one already converted for this and see if I can get you some pictures. Speaking to Charlie would be your best bet. He knows all the names and terms for this hook up.

              Thanks

Thanks for the replies. The lower throttle hook up would be ideal. How could I get ahold of Charlie? Thanks again guys. Any more input or pictures would be great.

Inclosed is a picture of what you need. It is a factory part sold as an accessery. It picks up on the top of the carb and rides along the tiller handle where it picks up the throttle cable. You will see a provision on the handle for the cable. This has compound angles to fit the engine. The one I have is new and never used, just sitting aroung for years. ....Bob

Wow. Looks like a tire iron in the pics! Does the end at the bottom have a hole for the cable to thread through? This is kind of what I had in mind when trying to fabricate something. I think it would do the job with a little oil on the sleeve at the carb end. Do you want to part with it? I may try to weld something up still.

Yes the other end had a hole in it for the cable and also a screw to tighten. You don't have to do anything to it to fit the engine. Again this is a factory part made for these Mercury engines. The only thing you have to do is cut the part on the carb that picks up the stater. If not the spark arm will hold the carb open when the ignition timing is advanced. The other method is to remover the pick up on the stater, (two bolts) so the timing and throttle are seperate. Yes I would consider selling it. It is the last one I have and have not seen one of these for many years now. Something like this could be made but the compound bends for clearance make it very difficult to get right. Let me know your thoughts.....Bob

I just spoke to Charlie he is going to draw me a picture for changing the linkage from the top of the carb to the bottom. He has a motor already rigged up this way but he could not remember which one (he has so many) so I could not get any pictures. It really does not seam like a diffucult process. I'll scan his drawing and place it here. I will try to have this in today.

If you look at the carb you can see the pin moving at the bottom with a small spring on it that links to the top linkage. You are basically just reversing this.

The way that Bob is showing is the original bar that Carl K. sold for this when keeping the cowling on the motor.

                        Ke-7

Appreciate the input from everyone. Would be interested in adapting the carb for connection at the bottom. I saw a picture in a book of this setup, but it's hard to make out other than the cable is heading toward the bottom of the carb.

What do you think you want for this part Bob? I'll be honest, I'm going to figure this out somehow; I don't have a fortune to spend. My son and I have cobbed the hydro (three point) and used an Elgin 7.5 before we found this engine.

                        Thanks again guys.

See if I did this correct. If not send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will send the pictures that way.

Thanks Mike for the drawings. I'll have to look at the carb to get the full idea. Looks like I have a few options that I didn't have yesterday. Thanks everyone.

Bob, do you have a price in mind for your throttle adapter? I didn't mean to put you off; I just can't go crazy with this project.

                            Thanks.

I sent you a PM with the details. Not too crazy anout letting it go but I figure I will not be setting up one of these on a boat in the near future....Bob
