Yes it was. Most Reg 10 racers out here don't need to jet that often believe it or not.

There was one year when the Nationals were at Hinton WV and Paul Fuschlin killed everyone with his 6 in FER. I checked his heat times and they were faster than anyone ran in FEH. Times have changed and FEH motors and boats have evolved so that scenario is unlikely to be possible today while the 6 still has its handicap of height.

We made a trip to Yelm once with Leigh Furnal to get him a record to make sure he got in the Hall of Champions. Stevens was there with his 6 on a hydro. He was there the year before and it was the most terrible handling boat you ever saw but they had worked the bugs out and this time it was fast! Furnal and I signed up for the patrol boat for 1100 H to get a good view of what we thought might be a 100 mph record. 1100 ran near the end of the days schedule and by the time it got close, the conditions were just great. But then they announced that the class before 1100 would be the last class they ran because of time. Furnal and I were really disappointed, so I grabbed the radio and said, " Check that last announcement, 1100 will run today." Surprisingly, there was no one asking who said that or anything and 1100 did run and Stevens set the record. It was beautiful to watch- especially if you had seen how bad it was the year before. He didn't get it to 100 mph but it was close, like 96 or 98.

And we did get Furnal a record and into the HOC. He was out in front with his 20 Hydro when it slowed down because both spark plugs came loose. 20 was one of the first classes to run and he left it sit out all night. He still needed a record so we sent him out in John Puestow's DSR. This was the dawn of hydrobout or side-fin technology and despite the fact that Leigh had never tested this rig or even driven a DSR before, he beat Ronnie Hill's record easily and got in the HOC.

On the long drive back we chuckled about the DSR record but even more about how we "helped" Stevens get the record with his 6.

That is good info. I am not denying that as I have not been there before. Do you guys need to jet different when you come east to the midwest ?

I know Kilo set-ups are very different that oval race set ups, as who cares about turning in a kilo ! Jack it up !

Hopefully Chenney can up his own record, he seems to love setting those kilos !

I jet more in Depue, IL than probably anywhere else. But that may be more because it can be SO much different than out here.

There is a lot more that goes into set-ups than just jacking it up. I'm sure you are aware of this, but I want to make anyone else who is not aware of it aware. Kilo's can be very dangerous. Yes you need a good motor and props, but set up is very critical.

Thank you for pointing that out, I should have worded that more careful.

That said, give your favorite prop maker a call and get the big prop with a certain diameter and pitch that is designed to hold the azz end down and jack it up. Never recommended for oval racing of course. If you do, you are asking for it. It is a lot different racing yourself in a Kilo than racing 11 others in an oval.
