It is taking a lot of effort not to take a shot at the current state of Hot-Rod here.

Champion, but probably not a "Hot Rod"

Champion started out making fishing motors

I believe the Champion that size of that era was 12-1/2 c.i. rated at 7.9 hp. I had two of them as a kid in the 50's. One of mine was a gasoline burner and the other was an alcohol burner. At that time they raced in National Outboard Association races as class A-1. My alcohol burner was built by Irv Kurke a Champion engineer, and a boat racer, it had a lightened flywheel, knurled pistons and open exhaust. Both had Hot Rod gearcases.

His brother. As a note, when Ray quit racing , about 1960 I bought a B Hot Rod from him. As another note, when Irv would win a race he would stand on his head with his feet straight up in the air as the crossed the finish line. I had a photo showing that, but lost it over the years. Different era back then!

I think I might know the seller. At that price it will be a fishing engine especially if I know the seller.

See my post above. Champion built the 12-1/2 c.i. Hot Rod first, then after it was discontinued came the 9.9 c.i and 19.94 c.i. and a couple of prototype 14.94 c.i. engines. Later Lyle Swanson build the "A" Hot Rod in quantities after he bought the fishing motor replacement parts business and the rights to the Hot Rod from the factory. But yes there, was a Hot Rod version of that old engine.

As a side note: I grew up on Lake Minnetonka just West of Minneapolis. My next door was a Champion dealer. I have been to the factory many times as a Kid. And, I believe I got the last Champion Hot Rod ever built at the factory. It after they had stopped production but before the rights were purchased by Swanson. My neighbor went down to the factory and they put together a "B" for me complete with the optional alcohol jet and open exhaust stack. The price? $125.00 as I remember.

Champion made three versions of the early 12+ Cu in Hot Rods, 162 of the 4KS in 1949, then 38 of the 4LS in 1950 then on to 238 of the 4LS- 1X in 1950 and 1951. The 4KS and 4LS had gearcases that looked like the Hydro drive cases of the 2LHD and 4LHD service engines. the 4LS=1X was the first with the actual racing gearcase with the 14/19 ratio.
