  • Wanted: Lay-Down Marathon D Runnabout

I am looking for a Lay-Down Runnabout to run in Marathon racing. Don't know if anyone has done this or if it's even possible, but I would like to try it. I have two bad knees so a kneel down is out of the question. I want to run a marathon before I quit racing, oxygen may be needed.

I have plenty of D class Mercs so, I guess D class it is. Anything out there or would someone entertain building something for me, but it's gotta have a water bottle holder and lots of padding. I'm an old guy in need of comfort.

What about a padded V like a Dillon. That would move out with a D motor on it....

Then you could lay back and not get the wind knocked out of you when it gets rough...

            Do you mean Top O'?
Last year at Top O' I tried a resting pad between my legs. I'd sit my butt down on it most of the time. It took a lot of load off my knees.
As was already suggested, I would bet a lay down would knock the wind outta you in the rough stuff. And being that low down to the water, you'd have touble seeing.
            How 'bout an SLT?

Mike, I've run Top O many times and there is no way I'd even consider lying down. You'll ruin the rest of you bod. Jack

                Capsule Runabout

Tom Brinkman ran a capsule runabout several years ago in the
Title Series. Not sure what happened to the boat or where it
                ended up.

                  Big tank

I had a large fuel tank that I sat on while running top o
Pad the %%%% out of it and at least you can take a quick rest
It do limit your movement in the boat but in a D not to bad. I still have the tank, It could be borrowed or sold .

I kinda said "like" a Dillon.

I'd be afraid that if you ran a Dillon with a D motor it would take flight. The Dillon has a wide duck bill front and it gets light at 50 mph. Faster and you would probably be blowing it over.

What we (I say we cause I'm in the same boat, too old to kneel down over that kind of distance) really need is a boat that is fine up front (like a Sorenson) with a V hull aft that would take the rough stuff better and woudn't be so CG sensitive as a regualr runabout.

All it takes is money and time to do it.

                      Hi Guys:

Thanks for all the input and it all makes sense. I didn't think this would be a easy thing to do but I figured I would ask. Like to see this capsule runnabout that Brinkman ran, that sounds interesting. To run this Top O Marathon, does the boat have to match the spec of a D Stock Runnabout exactly or can it be a different type of hull? Anyway, keep the info coming my brain is working on it.

Bob Rusnak, could you email me some pictures of your Krier, startyourengine@comcast.net, especially the cockpit and dimentions of the hull. What class pro boat is it and what's the transom angle? You PRO guys run some strange transom angles for a stock motor.

                      Thanks,
                      Mike

What would work is a sit down Yamato Deep V like Roland Decert runs at Top 'O. The first year that I ran the race, I think '89, Mullett Lake was very rough. A Japaneese driver won C on Saturday with a Yamato deep V & second overall only beaten by Billy Allen with his D 14' DeSilva. I had a DNF that first day with a hole in the bottom of my boat.

Hi CSR4C you got a name or is this it?

Yes, I have heard of these Yamato deep V boats and I think I saw a pictures of them years ago but never came across one for sale. That may be a possible but I don't know that they will support a 44XS or a 55H. If you come across one for sale let me know. I do have plenty of Yamato motors also.

                          Thanks,
                          Mike

Be nice now, that is Sir Darrell Sorenson you are addressing.

From what I've seen of Roland's Yamato V-boat, it would handle a D.
I hope you're able to run the Top O'! It's quite an experience, unlike any other in boat racing.

                              Hello Jeff:

Yep, I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Sorenson, I mean I have his videos on boat building and I wish I had his tallent. He surely knows more than I will ever know. But if a person does not sign his name to a letter then how is a person know who he is dealing with?

With all this e-mailing and especially this texting crap, we have lost all of our letter writing abilities and personal communications. Communications today are like fast food at McDonald's, think about it. You might as well end a conversation via email with "end trans".

But, I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Sorenson.

                              Thank You,
                              Mike De Lisa
