You can't go wrong with a 44 mod Merc. lots of parts . ran just about everywhere and for a Big GUY About all that will get us around a course. All three organizatons run these. Might even work on your existing boat . altho I would hate to race a rare piece like that. Fe is also mostly universally raced and is good for us full figured drivers. with the 44 you could also step up into fe and get a two rides for one rig deal going.
Lots of this equip out there used, for sale. let me know if you need any help.fact I think I now of a hydro or two that could be had very very right for a new guy.

I have alot of the parts and full-size templates for this boat, and that's why I was asking about class and "IF" it was a legal design....so, you have answered my question as to whether this boat can become usable..

I'm sure I'll have some questions as I'm working on "Re-designing" my Airmarine...at least that's the first project lined up...
engine choice will be tuff for me...I'm a die-hard omc nut, although I do have a few pumped Mercs under my belt...I'll look into researching that as I go...

I am an OMC nut 2 but they tend to be sized slightly over... 22ci & 31.8 ci just over B-20ci & C 30ci although Ive heard of 22s adapted to A-B
merc lowers, maybe 25ss, Ive seen a couple of these as non racers and they rock!

Joe Michelini's Air Marine Special with a 60 ci Merc would be legal in FEH in Mod, but a 270 boat is about 150 pounds over weight in FEH.

You would be much better off with one of Marc Johnson's designs with a 49ci 3 cylinder OMC .... but FEH is not a beginner's class. You could build a D hydro and move up to FE later.

Correct, you can pretty much use the same boat in D Stock (44ci Merc) D Mod (stock or modified 44ci Merc) and FEH Mod (with 44ci Merc, 42ci OMC, 49ci OMC, 60ci Merc, 62 ci Merc); The same boat might also run 250 alky ... maybe even 350 alky.

Between D Stock and D Mod .... sometimes Stockers win crossing over to Mod with their stock equipment. Motor change is not completely necessary going to Mod if you have a D Stock.

I have built over 15 race boats of my own design, if I where you I would build a MJR boat from their designs. Your a big boy and I would get into the largest class available in your area.

Joe Michelini was a great guy. I bought my first likejacket, boat hardware and props from him back in the early 60's.

The manual lists all the things an inspector must check to certify a championship or speed record for each motor allowed for each Stock class


Sorry, no OMC's in D Stock

D Stock is not popular in all areas ... you need to identify which classes run in your area before deciding exactly which class to race

Checked Texas and Ok...nothing there either...
This may be something I'm going to have to wait another year to see whats running where.....
I was wanting to have a boat running this summer, more for learning the boat than racing for the first summer...we'll see what happens.

With the equipment that you acquired of Joe's, did you get an unusual looking 8-cylinder engine? They attempted to stck to 350 Yamato's in order to make a 700cc engine. I saw it at Hinton, WV. It did not get to far.

I remember a 8 running at Hinton, around 1976. Awesome acceleration. I thought they ran it with the F hydros. Who's ride was it? Anyone got a picture?

Kenney I would think the 49.7 ci omc motor would work perfect for what you want to do. It is called a Formula E (FE) motor in APBA and they call it a Super E (SE) in the AOF and NBRA. The rules for this class are all about the same in each orgnization. This is in the Mod division which I think you will find to be your best bet in your area. We live in Mo. and run in the midwest with NBRA. Some of the states that have Mod NBRA races are Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri and have raced in Kansas. I would say the OMC motor is the Motor of choice in the SE-FE class. The next motor you would probably want is the 44ci Merc.
