Can a stock outboard runabout in APBA have a v-bottom?
Just wondering since none of them do now... It really looks like the Yamato fiberglass runabouts that Ric or Bob Montoya imported: any idea if that's where the boat design originated? I saw a Yamato runabout at Lake Placid in the late 1990's on Bob Montoya's trailer, but I forgot where it was headed.

Cool boat!
"Can a stock outboard runabout in APBA have a v-bottom?" Yes as long as it does not have negative deadrise and meets the other category runabout specs.
In radio control boat racing, all of the runabout classes (mono classes) are currently domimated by Vee bottomed hulls. It wasn't always that way. They used to be all flat bottomed boats. What happened was guys started trying vee hulls. First there was the "is it legal" question. But then, as they became competitive and they became the majority they would chop the water up enough so that the flat bottoms were at a disadvantage. I've raced some R/C mono classes with flat bottom designs, basically semi scale runabout designs. And you know what everyone says? "Is that legal?" Turns out the guys have the vee hulls as fast as the flat bottoms. And the flat bottoms don't seem to tolerate the race water nearly as well as the vee hulls.
This boat should run good in race water and have an advantage as the water gets rougher on lap 2 and 3 or later in the afternoon when the wind kicks up. And when it comes to Top O', this might be the ticket. By the looks of the video, it runs very clean with no pitching.
Keep us posted on this. I have a feeling we are going to see more of this boat. And congratulations for trying something a little outside of what is currently considered the norm.

The Radio Control guys have not figured out how to "scale down" the waves and swells for the flat bottoms. The "deep-vee" has a scaled down flat bottom when it is up on top.!"Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain."

I think Matt has hit the nail on the head. At a time when runabout's popularity continues to decline into near non-existence, this could be something to attract people to them. Especially if they are easier to drive. How cool would a large production of these be that were available to anyone to purchase? (It wouldn't have to be CSR)
It's way past time to think outside the box. Good luck with this guys, I hope it pans out into something Matt has mentioned.

Brew- The idea is to have a class you can run anywhere in any conditions. A 20ci Sidewinder or Hotrod in a 11 foot version of that, maybe with a larger pad(12" to 14" instead of 8" for balancing purposes), and the gas tank between your legs doubling as a padded center pod seat. THAT would be fun for everyone.sigpic

Padded center pod seat...
Matt, do you feel that you need to take a seat during your CSR heats?! Maybe we can mount an oxygen tank and bifocal lensed cowling perhaps... Just kidding buddy, saw an opportunity for a deserved cheap shot! Great idea with the V bottom, looks like it's truckin' in the video, love to see it heads up against a ripping CSR. GLFuture J dad!

Are you talking a . . . a UTILITY RUNABOUT? Like a . . . a boat with, um, one of those front cockpits and seat for a passenger? Lawsy, what will you guys think of next?carpetbagger

Chris,
When you told me back in March you had something up your sleeve you weren't kidding! If you want to get together sometime after the Worlds and do some testing give me a holler.
Keep up the good work!_____________________________________________

Thanks for chiming in Bill! Way to keep it really up beat and progressive. Wait, it has already been done before and will never work, right?Last edited by MGallagher; 09-19-2008, 10:01 PM.sigpic
