Interestingly, I understand from Dave Scott that there is another hull set up like this that is successfully running in the class.

Clearly we’ll learn a lot more as we chase the set-up.

      Dan:

As I mentioned in my 1st post we just got done breaking-in the engine so we have yet to put the hammer down. We’re initially very pleased with the balance and stability of the boat, all be it, at the low 70 MPH range. I don’t feel anything evil working.

As you may have guessed, it’s a large boat measuring in at 12” 10” long but, typical of a Pugh, she’s very well built and quite light.

While I have the forum I guess I’ll add one BTW. I went round and round on the 44xs vs. Tohatsu scenario and ultimately decided to go with a new Scott 44xs. I can’t tell you how pleased I am with the support, craftsmanship and attention to detail that I received from Dave. Anyone considering a new engine should take a hard look at what he has to offer………. End of commercial.

      • Good Boat!

        Scot,

You bought a good boat with a lot of history. That boat has won 3 PRO National Championships at DePue.

1999 - 350cc with Denny Henderson driving for me (I had to leave to go home
because my daughter was admitted to the hospital).

        2000 - 250cc and 350cc with me driving.

Looks like it is still in great shape.

        Have Fun!

        Chris Hellsten

P.S. - Check out my avatar.....your boat with a 350cc PRO motor on it!

Thanks for the kind comments. The Pugh was a 350 pro boat that we modified for DSH. Gary builds really solid high quality boats so it was a relatively easy project. We purchased it from Mark Gryskiewich (from an ad on this site). I’m told that Hellsten also drove the boat to the 350 cc National Championship.

We have to spend some time with it but, early on, it is very nice to drive.

You nailed it with regard to our thinking about the trailer. We wanted a small fuel-efficient trailer that we could also use as a “float off” at conventional launch ramps when we go testing. It has an engine rack on the front and tows perfectly well. Hey, at $4:00/gallon and climbing it seemed like a reasonable approach.

I am new to the Stock outboard scene and I don't run D class (My name lies, ), but by 'new' do you mean reconditioned/rebuilt because I thought they stopped producing the 44xs a while ago (80's?). I am asking this out of pure curiousity.

            Silas,

I have been reproducing the motor for almost 5 years ans we have sold about 20 complete engines some are running evry weekend and some have not even been started. Pretty much everything on the motor other than the block and crank are brand new. I rebuild the fuel system and the igntion. I use new stators and triggers from rapair mainly because I do not trust either component as used. Stator for sure may work Awesome when they are cold but the problems missing, hard starts, etc when they get warm and the really nice thing about the rapair stators is that they are not encapsulated in plastic the windings are exposed allowing them to dissipate some of the heat.

            Scott

Looks fantastic, I am glad it all worked out, thanks for the Kudos. It is awesome to see some of these motors now making it to the water. Doug Follet made it to Franklin with his Scottcraft boat and motor last weekend as well. Good Job guys.

            • Are more and more of the 44xs's ending up in collectors hands instead of racers? I remember seeing one collection in particular were there were at least 3-4 complete 25xs's and several Yamatos (not sure what exactly). Like I understand why people collect and restore 20/30/40/55h's along with others but why a dozen or more of each? They get restored, which is great, but will likely NEVER see the water again, just collect dust on a barn wall. Whats the point to having 12+ 20h conversions and countless others all to one person. makes me sad. But then again, who knows how many of them are sitting in barns and attics that have yet to be discovered. well enough of my ranting. don't need to get off topic.

              ADD:

A couple months ago on craigslist I saw someone selling a Mercury Thunderbolt 50hp outboard $200 obo I clicked on it thinking it was a beat down crappy 50hp merc. The description was a "race preped 50hp outboard for 12-13 foot hydroplanes". It was a race preped 55h that sat in his garage probably was his grandfather's. He wanted $200 obo, he had no idea what he had. Of coarse I called him IMMEDIATELY but guess what, it was already sold.... I propbably went and looked at that add 200 times. Thinking to myself "I hope this doesn't end up sitting on a garage wall for the next 20 years, and boy would that have been perfect for my ClarKraft, have it restored mercury red/tan would look perfect."

Nice lookin' rig Scot! I hope to see you at one of our Illinois races. Sadly, I won't be racing DSH in Michigan. (not enough room on my trailer)

                  Silas,

The actual production numbers of an actual mercury produced 44 xs are pretty low, if my sources are correct they only ever made like 150 of them total, Maybe even less. But there are lots more around as the parts were available back then and they share the same mid as a 10Xs and 25XS so one could be created and when lower units WERE available new from Merc they could be had for few hundred $$. There are a few that I know of sitting in crates and never opened, I probably would steer clear of those unless there were for just that - sitting on a stand. I know of 1 new mariner or spoke of, at least the guy would never send a pic of the crate, that he says he has the motor in. The bulk of them were built then shipped to Harold Barnes for rework and then delivered to the racers. Now the tall tale goes that there were Several Uncut (cheater blocks) that left the factory and I had a somewhat hard time believing this until a few weeks ago when an uncut, unported, non-painted block was found in someone's (a racer)parts inventory.

Here's a couple of pics of my new Silvestri CSR I just built for my racing comeback. Now all I need is a motor, prop, and 2XL safety gear. I'm hoping to start racing by mid July. It will probably be fall Franklin.
