Another principle of physics that the "deflect the boat upwards" crowd is forgetting is simple inertia. Short of building sides that are armor plate, there will be some pentration and wood sticking into wood (or foam if you go that route). I can't imagine the case that a side is so impenetrable to totally stop penetration and impart enough force to redirect the forward motion of a boat 90 degrees to send it upward. That isn't to say it is impossible, but I'd reason that it is in fact improbable.

    Steve,

I think the "deflect the boat upwards" crowd is concerned that if a t-bone does happen, it would be very rare to occur at exctly 90 degrees. It would be interesting to see some test samples done at different angles. Also, I would not expect an armor plate side to redirect the forward motion of the other boat 90 degrees sending it upwards, I would expect the boat that is being hit to rotate away from the other boat (pushing the boat over), putting the cockpit side at a much reduced angle thus turning it into a ramp.

Thanks for your help with the test samples, hope to get a chance to talk to you in Detroit.

    Bill

PS - keep up the good work on Kyle's boat, it looks great!

I take great pains in the photos to hide the crap in the background!

The test rig impacts the sides at 15 degrees as I agree that a perfect perpendicular hit would be the exception and not the rule. Even at that though I can see the boat rotating to the side, but can't really see where that would make it into a ramp.

No matter what we do, there will always be the exception and special cir***stances that we cannot predict or cover. We can't bury our head in the sand an do nothing either. I can't speak for the inidividual commissions, but I'm willing to bet that no rules will be added until there is data to support claims and solutions. Everyone needs to relax on this and not add fuel to the fire. That doesn't help anything.

            • Kyle update

He got the nose on and the deck stringers in. Tomorrow will be coating the insides in preparation for the deck. I guess we are behind where I thought we would be, but judging from his grin, I don't think he cares a bit. Here are a couple of photos from this evening. We wanted to be sure to have extra strength in the deck in case he needs to get a foot out to plane so he found the spot. The next was just to see what he looks like in racing trim.

              • New to Joey

Joey picked up his J hydro for 2008 yesterday. He also helped me repaint my new Giles boat. Joey will finish lettering them this week and add the hydroracer stickers. Special thanks to Tom Cronk, the Mackrell family, the Nuccio family and the Tetro family for the J help.

                    • Joe was busy

Joe has been busy with the vinyl. He picked the colors, letter styles and placement of the lettering. Not bad for 11 years old.

                        • No blue

Joe's color scheme is red white and blue. I didn't have enough of the blue he wanted for hydroracer.net so he is waiting for the delivey truck tomorrow.

It is hard to see in the picture but everything is blue & white except for the side numbers.
