OMC 25 motor approved for A mod

J Class restictor plate. I have 302 yamat what size bore do i need.Are the 80 & 102 & 202 & 302.Yamat the same size bore. DUTT266

J in APBA does not run a Yamato in J......Unless it shows up at the National meeting??

Last I knew "J" in APBA ran the OMC and Merc 15HP motors.

I've just about had it! you have pushed the hot rods out of the b class and now you are going to add insult to injury by adding a bunch of 20ci motors to A mod. I think there's two things going on with this thread. I'm guessing that the recent request from dutt266 was for a restrictor plate for the Y-80 to run novice in NBRA???

The other discussions and earlier 2004 posts were about the 1970's version stock 25 engine (without a pipe) that was requested and approved to run in "A" mod" (250MH) . I think this was back in 2004. This closed up engine makes you use the old mercury tower (not the new one) and Merc 16:21 gearbox. This was a early stock engine for 25 and a chamber or megaphone pipe is not allowed in this class. It was not extremely fast. Have never seen one show up at a race.

I think this was 10 + years ago. Anyone care to add detail on the old 25 engine?

Assembled 2 brand new A mods for next year and now they want to start putting 400cc motors in our 250cc class. Between that and the current termoil in b stock it is getting hard not to feel personally assaulted. And I am sure that I am not the only one feeling that way.

the 25ssmerc has run with me at Hillsdale mich.chuck zolkowski won aginst my 20h runabout.they will not compete with a 15 hot rod,just not fast enough.i run this class every year,im not worried about the 25ss ,knowone runs them because there slow in stock form.

,yes danny but they must run them stock,i run a 25ss mod in 350ccm runabout and it is way faster than my 250ccmr hot rod rig.but in stock form the 25ssmerc is not that fast.

Back in the day Stover's B Runabout Lap times were faster than the D Runabout Times. I suggest the 55-H be considered as an additional A-Mod Engine. It would be a great crowd pleaser and a good Hot Rod could still wine the race!

I worked with the closed exhaust, stock, 22 OMC for several seasons in AMH between 2005-2009.
Best I could get with it was a 3rd at Zanesville MODIFIED Nationals 2009.

1st heat I nailed the start. On the second lap 40M caught and passed me with 2-3 mph with Dugan's piped Hot-Rod on his chime........The rest of the field was BSH 15 Hot-Rods that jumped in to make a race......I finished 3rd with the piped Hot-Rods leaving me 1/2 lap back and the stock H/Rs on my chime.

Second flight I got a bad start with both piped Hot Rods out front and two stock Hot-Rods I was trying to keep with.....That was all I could do.

Managed a 3rd overall and I believe that's the best a 22 stocker has come to the 15 Hot Rods In AMH.

Fall Lock Haven 2009 was the same with the piped Hot-Rods pulling away and my stock 22 OMC mixing it up with the stock 15H/Rs that jumped up to make a class.

This year at Fall Lock Haven we talked about your new driver and and your 15H/R rig you bought from Earl.....That rig is the one Earl stayed with me in the first AMH flight at Zainville 2009........and the one I could not pass in the second flight.

I hope after we talked the first day at Fall Lock Haven this year, you watched AMH where Ken Terry's BSH was able to stay with the piped Hot-Rods that struggled to stay ahead of the two 20 commode Mercs from Canada after Ken caught and ran over my chambered Hot-Rod Sunday......My motor is the one Chuck Z. won high points with in AMR 2012.

My point is AMH has rebounded with the Hot-Rod still dominant and the 20 Merc Commodes from Canada on their heals.
The 22CI OMC/Merc stock motors are in the hunt and now have a place to race while supporting the class, but not a real threat unless very lucky.....Also it has dragged a few of those 25ss and 22 cube OMC, cobweb covered motors back to the sport and gave me and a few others struggling to make a 25MOD class at a race, a place to to compete by removing the pipe when not enough 25mods show to make a class or it can also benefit an event with support to get both classes on the water. I have competed at several races with this motor in both classes that would not of had enough rigs to make either class without it.
The speed difference with and without the pipe is surprising. Again, look at the speed data and win history before motor size.
The Canada Merc commodes(Rob Dixon-Will Hunter) are fast and have won several times this season and left me and my chambered 15 Hot-Rod in their wakes(with a boat length jump that gave me the win) at Spring Franklin at the start of the season.

AMH....errrrrr ....250cch...errrr.... 250ccMh...errrrrr ... is surviving and is very close competition AND one of the most exciting MODIFIED classes to watch and compete in!!

The interesting part was watching BSH at Lock Haven and your new driver getting faster each lap as the 20CI Sidewinders walked away from Ken Terry (that was close to the piped H/Rs earlier in AMH) leaving Ken and the other stock 15 Hot-Rods including your rig, in their wakes ........

Later at Lock Haven,I asked Tom Sutherland if the stock 20 Sidewinder was being looked at for AMH because to me it looks like a better match there than in BSH?........He just shook his head without replying.
I didn't realize at that time that the 15CI Sidewinder is now legal with a chamber in A-MOD. Still waiting to hear how this deflector piston motor will perform with reeds instead of the rotary valve that in my opinion gives the Hot-Rods the wider powerband needed to make use of a chambered exhaust.

Never heard if the stock 20 Sidewinder was ever tried probationary in BMH (where it won't have a chance), or the MODIFIED Sidewinder version in the faster(??) 25MOD class.
I did get to see Will Hunter's back side as his probationary, in 25MOD, stock 25xs slaughtered my best 25mod and another new racer's 25MOD at Franklin.
But then again it did get us on the water, points, and a vote for next years ballots.

Should be very interesting at Reno in Feb. to see the last minute hand raises for proposals in BSH/AMH and BMH/BMR and 25MOD.....and any probationary motor reports??

Wish I could afford to go with a big bowl of popcorn and sit in the back row.

It is the intention of the MORC to provide the means to run the 22 cu. in. OMC and Mercury motors as stock
production powerheads on a racing lower unit.


11. Powerheads must use a stock 250 cc & 350 cc Modified Hot Rod, 250 cc & 350 cc Modified Mercury, 25
SS Mercury drive housings.

21. The OMC 13.2 cu.in. A downhousing without the tuned exhaust pipe is allowed on the 22 cu. in. OMC and
22 cu. In. Mercury motors. The OMC A gearcase is allowed in the 250 cc classes.

Larry Stenander who also runs CMR, Is running the OMC-A tower housing and foot with his 22OMC.
I talked to him at spring franklin 2013 and he told me the neat thing about this combination is the powerhead adapter is very simple to make!

I believe you will see the MORC and competitors who vote in this class have made a big effort to accommodate the engines by factoring the win history and data of an engine and not CI......Pros used this thinking for years with deflector vs loop charge CC's (CI).
Whether it is selflessness or self survival can be argued, but for A-MOD it has kept this class competitive, fun, and for now on the water instead of on the beach or in the motor box.
That may change once the class has a healthy member count and a minority motor almost wins a few races............

Was not a full APBA member last year so The ballot Nazi has shut me off......... My point is I am ready to try again IF the 20 Merc gets to run CDI..... I have the parts but lack motivation if not any link of info on the 20 Merc and mag parts and adapter to run OMC ign would be appreciated........
