  • Question To Ed Hearn and The APBA SORC

Question about the Mercury 44XS towerhousing. How much did the APBA SORC pay to have the towerhousing re-tooled and mfg. In other words, what was the cost for tooling, patterns, etc.?

And, how many have been sold?

I have been informed the cost was $80,000.

Thanks in advance for the answer to these questions.

    Dean,

APBA did not pay for the tooling or the patterns. Tad Olson, with the help of IAI Performance, was kind enough to handle that part of the project--at no cost to APBA. The SORC did purchase a few units to help get the project going. The money to purchase these units came from the SORC promotion fund. Each time a part is sold, the funds are redeposited into the SORC's promotion fund. As of today, all but one adaptor ($250.00) and one driveshaft housing ($325.00) have been sold. Hence, the SORC's current investment in this project is $575.00. Anyone wanting to purchase these parts should send an email to Patty@apba-racing.com.

IAI Performance has picked up the manufacture of these parts, and the parts continue to be made--at no cost to APBA.

$575 is a long way from $80,000. Who is the source of your information?

    Regards,

    Mark

These are great housings! I put one under my mod engine. And the people who did the casting and machining are top notch, a positive influence on the sport. Why not buy one, build up your own engine and join us in the peaceful, fun loving modified outboard division?

        Dean,

IAI Performance also makes a driveshaft housing and adaptor plate for the 25XS. This is also being done at no cost to APBA.

          Could These Mid Sections...

Could the APBA midsections be made to work on a 45???

          How tall are they?

            Ron,

They are the same heigth as the original 44XS parts. I don't see any reason why the driveshaft housing wouldn't work under a 45. The adaptor plate would need to be different.

                  Ron,

The driveshaft housing itself is about 8.5 in. The driveshaft housing and the 44XS adaptor plate is 9 and 7/8.

                  Cheers,

                  Mark

                    Another Question

Actually, the promotional fund made a little money on the whole deal.

Question: Should we do it again?

                        Ed,
1st - I would have thought that you would have been too busy trying to get the bullseye off your back to start picking more fights? Guess not.

2nd - And while Mr Wheeler was in Franklin, I know for a fact you were not. I always thought "Hearsay" was inadmissable as evidence.

3rd - I would think it is safe to say that there were several Nationals in 2005 that hit "bumps" in the road. However, wouldn't it be unfair to bring up an single issue and use it to characterise a whole category? Don't you think?

It shows lack of character when you resort to deflecting the spotlight off of youself by tossing someone else on stage. You are better than the "But he did this" defense.

                          Mark,
I'm interested in tower/adapter...But have a couple other purchases to pay first.....(One being a 302 foot rework that I owe Tad O. for... )

Anyone have a D-foot for less than a second mortgage on my house?

Can they be drilled for both 25xs and 44xs foot paterns?

can they be drilled for new H/R foot?

How hard would it be to adapt a 302 foot?

What would the odds be of running a Yamato foot as a proto-type in D-Stock/Classic on this tower (with/without tuner pipe?)

                          Possitive thoughts......all (Please?).....
....Or at least take it out to the school bike rack....OK?

I'm not gonna look it up in the book (lazy). I doubt it would be legal. But, if we could do a show of hands at the drivers meeting, I'd be in favor of letting it run.
Maybe I'm thinking a little too MODish. I'd be in favor of any lower unit legal in D stock. As long as it meets the "R" dimension.
The Merc lower units are scarce, and available ones are prohibitively expensive.

                              jeff,

Most Merc Lower units can be bought for 1200 - 1500$ if new add a complete 44 mid-section etc you are into 2000-2300. For what is available "NEW" right now in STOCK (SORC Approved) towers and lower Units - Excluding Yamato's adapted to a merc or the like I think the prices are very close to the SAME, would you not say? I think a Bass lower Unit and Mid-section is around 2K is it not and a lower unit is 1400 or more. So what's the difference and most parts for the merc are not scarce, We have produced Cartridges, shims, prop-shafts etc... and bearings and seals are everywhere. The only thing lacking is the drive shafts and cases and that problem will soon be in the past. I have created an Ebay Store - you can link to it from my signature below. I am slowly getting it updated, it will become a central location for all of the reman parts that are available and as well new parts in kit form, IE rebuild kits, gasket sets etc...

                              Regards,
