  • Replace steel steering cables with rope line?

    I see a lot of folks using rope line to replace steel steering cables. I understand it provides "smoother" steering and I am interested in switching out my cables. I have to switch them out as I am moving my steering forward a bit as it is too far to the rear and the current cables are too short, hence replacement.

    What type/thickness of rope do I need? I'm looking at the dyneema sail rigging line, but don't know what thickness to get (it's all listed in mm thickness).

      -or, multiple mm x 4, ie;
      6mm x 4 = 0.24 inch , ~1/4 inch
      -or a 8mm gun is 32cal =0.32 inch diam
      1/2 inch ply is now 12mm
      -at least up here in the (not so) frozen north

    We use New England Ropes
    HTS 75 Dyneema Single Braid Line from West Marine in 3/16" size at 6,050lbs breaking strength. The larger size (e.g. 1/4") won't run/fit smoothly in our BTM coaming pulleys...but we've never had a problem with the 3/16"...

      We use New England Ropes V-100 5mm. Comes in various color combinations. Have been using it for 4 years. Good stuff.

        Annapolis performance sailing has a good selection. Pat and I switched a few years ago and all our boats have it. Works great.
